Summary
Thomas Lawrence left his role at the Vatican behind a while ago, it was turning him grey too fast. Now he's running his little church in the countryside, helping with the parish council. This is until disgraced ex-Cardinal Vincent Benítez, a man Thomas hadn't known existed, shows up on his doorstep shivering like a dog, exiled from Rome by the new Pope who clearly knows something about Benítez that Thomas does not.
Thomas opens up his church to Vincent, his home, his heart.

Summary
Innocent is looking out of the window as though he can see something more there than the blackness of a howling winter night. “I find myself wishing for his guidance.”
“If it is of any comfort,” Aldo tries, “He trusted Thomas to steer the Church through the Conclave. He was sure of his integrity like he was of no one else’s here. And Thomas has complete faith in you. You can be sure of his counsel.”
“I know I can. He’s been a blessing.” At the mention of Thomas, Innocent had brightened, but there is something searching in his expression when he looks back at Aldo, like he hadn’t quite gotten the answer he wanted.
Or: Aldo and Vincent discover that they have some things in common.

Summary
“May I ask you a personal question? You do not have to answer, of course.”
Lawrence's eyebrows rose. Given some of the subjects they’d already discussed, he scarcely dared wonder what the Holy Father might consider overly personal. “My dear Vincent, of course. Whatever you wish to ask me, please go ahead.”
Benítez smiled. “I was simply wondering. Are you and Cardinal Bellini... intimate friends?”
“Of—of course not!” Lawrence stuttered, knowing his face and chest had to be breaking out in splotches of bright red color, and hating it. “What an absurd thing to say! I—I haven't... I would not—”
Benítez just raised his own eyebrows, seemingly unmoved by Lawrence’s outburst. “Why not?”

Summary
Aldo has never really been one to think much about penance.
“We honor God in a multitude of ways,” he’d told Thomas once. “I agree that discomfort is useful. We learn to turn away from our sins and commit to do better. I don't understand what mutilating yourself in His name is meant to accomplish. We were not put in this world to suffer, Thomas."
Thomas had been quiet for a long time. "It is a different thing, though," he'd said finally. "You will agree on that much at least. Self-harm is a sin. Self-flagellation has a place in doctrine."
Aldo had winced. "Next thing you'll tell me is you've joined Opus Dei. You don’t think confession is enough? Prayer?”
“I think mortification of the flesh has its place,” he’d said absently, eyes faraway.
“Does it serve a purpose, though, apart from hurting you? Does senseless pain really bring you any closer to Him?”
Thomas had barely flinched. Aldo had felt possessed by the urge to grab his jaw and direct him forward, look at me, look!
“We must repent, Aldo,” he’d said simply. "By whatever means necessary."
He’s always thought Thomas did enough repentance as it was for the two of them. He thinks he understands better now.

Summary
Alma Bellini is desperately trying to pray her gay away in her all-girls Catholic school, but to no avail. It's not exactly easy, being surrounded by gorgeous girls on a daily basis while you're struggling with hormones and self-identity, but she manages, to some extent.
All that comes hurtling out of the window, though, when princely, pretty Victoria Benítez comes and sweeps everyone off their feet, Alma included.

Summary
To her, Tedesco was a vision.
She was beautiful in an ancient way, bright eyes, prominent nose, soft curls that had started to grey over the last years, big breasts and sensual curves, a sharp mouth.
To her shame, Bellini knew how many hateful words frequently fell from that mouth, but also how absolutely addictive it tasted on her own whenever Tedesco pressed her over the nearest surface to have her way with her.- Language:

Summary
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink." (Romans 12:20)
Becoming pope is hungry work. Tedesco has a history of hunger which has left him biting. Bellini has a history with Tedesco which has left him with love and nothing to say for it. There is dinner, communion, and a childhood memory of pasta, expired.
Does any man ever survive off bread alone?

Summary
The challenge of learning that he has desires was exhausting enough; Thomas is not ready to take the next one, of learning how to ask for what he wants. Vincent seems to think otherwise.
or, citing from a post that inspired me: Soft dom Vincent tells Thomas to “use his words” to get what he wants.

Summary
“Read it,” Ray urged. “It was addressed to you.”
“Later,” Thomas said, but Ray shook his head.
“Look at the date.”
Thomas took Ray’s proffered reading glasses and scanned the sheet of paper, which appeared to be a drafted memo. His eyes widened at the date at the top of the sheet: 20th October, 2021. That was the day after the Holy Father’s death. He then read the actual content of the memo, and he regretted it deeply because by the time he finished, he felt dizzy.
He wanted to throw up.
Thomas Lawrence has the burdensome duty of organizing a conclave to elect the new pope. When he receives a message claiming that the Holy Father might have been killed, the burden becomes a race against time as he works to prove the claim before the Church can crown a murderer.

Summary
“You’d like him, you know,” Thomas said.
“I do like him,” Aldo said automatically, twirling the stem of his wine glass, looking into its deep red like it was a scrying mirror.
“I mean as a friend. If you spent more time with him. You have a lot in common.”
“Do we use the same shampoo?” asked Aldo, raising an eyebrow. Thomas gave him a warning look but his mouth was tugging up.
“You’re both stubborn,” he said bluntly.
*
Cardinals like Thomas Lawrence and Aldo Bellini know all too well how slowly things move within the walls of the Vatican. But with Vincent Benítez's election cracking their world open, and the new Pope cutting away the old branches to make room for the new, both find that change is flooding in everywhere, mostly within themselves.

His faith remained firm, but his heart was hollow. Not because God had abandoned him, but because Thomas had given up the only person who ever taught him what it meant to love without fear.
Thirty winters passed. In each of them, Thomas prayed for Vincent. For him to be well, for him to do what he loved. For his memory to fade, to become nothing more than a blurred chapter, a distant scar. And above all, for him to never again carry the guilt of having been loved by him.

Summary
Tedesco is a patriarch, unrelenting, stuck in the past, cherries and booming voice preceding his appearance.
There’s nothing soft or gentle about him, and sometimes Aldo does wonder—had there been a time when it hadn’t been so? Had he always been so strict, so angry? Had he ever been sweet?Aldo Bellini and Goffredo Tedesco drive down to Matera, the Patriarch's hometown.
In the city of stones, nothing ever really changes.
Act I, Italienne—Matera, ouverture.
Act II, Tedesco—Bord de mer.
