Kakania knows better than to believe in all the gossip, nothing more than the desperate attempts of bored office workers to fill their days with something more interesting than their endless piles of paperwork. She has far more important work to do for the Foundation than entertain such meaningless speculation.

Vertin survives the Storm in 1929, but does not come out unscathed. In the early stages of her recovery at the Foundation, it is discovered by her care team that she has developed a condition known as Hanahaki Disease, a disease that is caused by extreme emotional distress around a person or incident activating latent arcanum in an arcanist's body. Her path to recovery was already set to be long - this will only drag it out further. It also means time is of the essence in waking her up - a task that will prove to be difficult for more reasons than one.
