An unfinished glass of whiskey before the fire in his living room shouldn’t been enough to tip their careful emotional balance into intimacy, but it had happened all the same.
Hannibal knew he was fond of Will; he was gorgeous when he let his guard down long enough to offer a genuine smile and laughter that seemed to originate somewhere in his belly, released unconsciously into the warm air around them like a blanket. The sound of Will’s laughter was magical - a balm to Hannibal’s soul, even if he was loathe to admit it out loud. It was rare enough that he cherished the sound, hid it away in his memory palace to peruse when his mind wasn’t otherwise occupied. He found himself drifting to those moments more and more often these days, but he stalwartly refused to acknowledge the tug on his heart the memories caused; refused to name the feeling of warmth that coursed through his body.
Love was an ideal that was more expensive than Hannibal could rightfully afford, but it didn’t keep him from wanting it.

Nothing would take Will from his arms and he used the last of his strength to tighten his arms around Will's waist, to burrow into the blood-soaked fabric of Will's shoulder, and breathe in the scent of this man one final time. This last surprise, Will's last design, to take them both. Hannibal knew no greater way to meet his death. He would proudly step into the Underworld with Will at his side. Hannibal smiled, then knew no more.

Summary
Of all of the reactions Jack had expected from Hannibal, calm rationalization was nowhere on the list. Anger, fear, flung accusations and veiled threats came with the territory of dealing with an emotionally charged situation, but when he picked up the phone to Hannibal’s voice explaining to him in clear, concise terms what had happened just moments before, Jack’s world felt as if it would collapse from beneath him, the earth swallowing him whole.
