But instead of returning to earth and running into Lance's open arms he runs into Lance's marriage to Allura. Had it meant nothing? The past overcomes him and he fights with not just Lance, but also Allura.
He hasn't returned to earth for eight years. But a lot can happen in eight years.----

The one where Keith is (probably?) still half alien, (seems) utterly oblivious to the (very real) supernatural world he unwittingly flirts with danger in. Hunk and Romelle are his best friends and they are both aware of the extra dimension to their world, and are determined to protect Keith from it as someone who (evidently?) doesn't know about it, but his determination to go exploring places with high-level demons on his own is making that difficult.
He doesn't seem any worse for wear, though...?

Lance tipped his head back and looked up at the tall ceiling of the ballroom. It was something he couldn’t help but do now that he was an experienced sniper. He followed the line of two pillars up and up, past the balcony and into the rafters. There—that was the best spot. You’d be able to see everything from there: the ballroom floor, the balcony, even the entryway all the way to the main doors.
He wasn’t expecting to see something shift though, and he watched in horror as a masked and cloaked figure appeared, lining up a rifle and pointing down into the crowd of people on the ballroom floor.
Or: A diplomatic gala takes an unexpected turn when Lance intercepts an assassination attempt on one of their allies. Leaving Lance injured and the others scrambling for answers, they enter a race against the clock to find who is responsible. They don’t know who did it, no one’s coming forward, and Lance is running out of time.

During the last battle against Honerva, things take a turn for the worse and Keith and the rest of Voltron end up dying. Keith wakes to in the past, very early on in his journey in space, even before their first encounter with Zarkon, and Keith thinks maybe he can change things.
Except Lance isn't here. Lance is missing.
