So he could touch Eddie on his legs and stare at his smile and not be afraid that other people would be mad at him for doing it.

It fucking hurt, it hurt so bad to be away from Eddie. It didn’t matter for how long. He had a constant aching in his chest being near the other boy, but being away from him felt like dying; like some horrible creature with terrible claws had a grip around his heart and refused to squeeze quite hard enough to put him out of his fucking misery once and for all. So he started doing something he really, really shouldn’t have done. -

In the years before they killed Pennywise, in the long epic of waiting that had been Mike Hanlon’s life, he had thought that after the monster’s death, everything would be easy. He had already done the hardest things, made the most difficult decisions. And in a way that had come true; things had settled simply and amazingly. Bill had come back for him, and they had built a home together. But it also turned out that the sky didn't fall and the Heavens didn't start singing his praises. His life now was not so deeply different from his life in those interminable years.
For Mike, part of staying behind in Derry was alternating between clinging to and doubting his childhood faith convictions. Now, after the devil has been spurned and he is miraculously still alive, he's got to learn to live with it – with all of it.

Part of him wanted Richie to run after him, grab him and apologize, tell Eddie he was just saying all of this out of anger or embarrassment or something, literally anything. Eddie wanted to feel Richie’s arms around him again, he wanted to go back and wait until he brought Richie home and sobered him up before letting him kiss him like that again. Eddie wanted to take Richie home and tell him it was ok, let Richie tell him it was ok.
Deep down, Eddie knew it wasn’t. That was made clear when Richie didn’t chase after him; furthermore when he never saw him again, leaving Derry for good.

Richie ushers Eddie out of the hospital as quickly as some enthusiastic nodding and a charming Thank you! Take care! can do. Only when they’re headed in the direction of the exit does he ask. “Me and Bill agreed not to call anyone yet, how on earth did Mrs. K know you were here?”
Embarrassment flashes hot across Eddie’s face. This isn’t the first time his mother has canvassed hospitals looking for him, but it is the first time since it’s dawned on him how sick their relationship is.
