Summary
Time between White Night and Small favor are only a few short months. Lash survives the events in the Raith Deeps, but Harry's psyche takes a nasty blow.He isn't given the chance to recover before he is thrown into a conflict between the Denarians and Marcone. The mental wounds from White Night still throbbed with each heartbeat and reverberated through his fractured psyche. Still he is forced to get involved when his owed favor is called in.
Nicodemus's original plan was to use Marcone to get the Archive. Until he saw how dreadful Dresden looked as he tried to negotiate Marcone's return. Plans changed. The Archive wasn't nearly the prize that Dresden was. Especially now that he was vulnerable. So he turns his plan from capturing the Archive at the Aquarium to capturing Dresden.

Summary
Can John Marcone keep his feelings hidden from Harry Dresden...not so much. However, the two of them find themselves in a slow building relationship that's full of missteps and anxiety as well as being the healthiest relationship either of them have possibly been in. Even if that bar has been set pretty low. They also find themselves navigating problems such as a mysterious group that wants Marcone dead and unexplained murders in the area. There is also the matter of Maggie Dresden who apparently thinks that Marcone is the best math tutor she's ever met.

Summary
Harry Dresden was adopted years early but not by Justin Demore. Instead he was adopted and trained by Kincaid the Hell Hound. With a different upbringing Harry is stronger for it. He sees even more of the grey areas and has few ties to the White Council.
At 16 he and Kincaid are contracted to kill Justin DeMore. Using explosives the take out DeMore and unfortunately his enthralled apprentice. Harry learns about the potential consequences and collateral damage of their work. The upside to their actions was saving potentially disastrous results of having a former Warden as a Warlock and collecting the Spirit of Air and Intellect. Reluctantly Harry is allowed to keep and name the spirit.
At 22 Harry breaks out on his own as a mercenary. He travels as much as he can but something keeps calling him back to Chicago. In a way it was a home he never really had with his and Kincaid's lifestyle. As he makes a name for himself Harry draws the attention of those who are curious about things left alone.

And Harry, he has a few choices to make too. After everything that happened that night of the battle, a potential marriage in the works and the knowledge that Karrin might still be out there, somewhere, what will he do about all that?
