After the events at Blackspire, Quentin and Eliot settle down together in Manhattan, eventually joined by most of their friends. No external crises on the horizon (or are there...?), no longer in school; they're left with a lot of money and time to explore who they are, what they want, and what they still need to work through--both as a couple and individually.
Along the way: travel, fine dining and wining, kink, friendship, parties, hedonism, friction, self discovery, a mystery or two, and--of course--magic.
This work continues the series For Want of a Nail, an AU serial novel where the Library doesn't succeed in siphoning off magic, and every major character escapes from Blackspire intact. (Including the Monster, but never mind that right now...)
Chapter one picks up a few weeks after Quentin and Eliot's return to New York from New Jersey in Familiarity.

“Yeah,” was all that Eliot could think to say, because Josh’s hand was very warm and the fabric of his shirt was so thin and Eliot could feel the ghost of something threatening through his torso but ignored it in favor of maybe not getting boned at this party.

Quentin Coldwater starts his first year at Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy with his two best friends, Julia Wicker and Arielle Prunum. While he’s thrilled to learn magic is real, he expects his social life to be basically the same—spending all his time with Arielle and Julia and watching as they make friends that he just can’t seem to click with. Eliot Waugh and Margo Hanson make sure that doesn’t happen.
Alice Quinn has had a love-hate relationship with magic ever since her brother died. The only reason she decides to go to Brakebills, is so she can learn more about what happened to her brother. Quentin Coldwater and Arielle Prunum burst their way into her life, changing everything.
Kady Orloff-Diaz sees Brakebills as an escape as much as it is a way for Marina Andrieski to exert even more control over her. Her plan is to steal stuff until she gets caught and then to run as fast as she possibly can. Penny Adiyodi, Julia Wicker, and Fen Culter make this plan a little more difficult than she would have preferred.
In which Fillory doesn’t exist, and that solves as many problems as it causes.

A cute nerd walks into a coffee shop, and a sexy barista makes a good impression, followed by a late-night study session, a meaningful talk, and a Halloween party.
The growing line of customers wind around the rope barriers, an endless sea of increasingly complicated orders as the day goes on. Eliot, in-between mixing drinks, fixes his eyes on a man of interest who might brighten up his day into something above tolerable. The first thing he sees is a worn-out book under the man’s nose and a tuft of brown, floppy hair that hides his face beneath his blue beanie. He wears a brown messenger bag slung over his shoulder, which flops on his side when he moves. He is reading as he shuffles forward in line, sandwiched between an endless hoard of bodies.
Eliot needs to get a look at his nerd-boy face.

By the time he had begun his second year at Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy, Eliot had worked very hard to become the persona he put forth for the world to see. As Eliot put it, “Becoming me was the greatest creative project of my life.” The suave, sophisticated god of hedonism that everyone knew and wished they could be was Eliot’s most elaborate charm, and he wore it well. His favorite past-times were mixing drinks at one of his elaborate parties, and tormenting the newest first-year that lived in the Physical Kids’ Cottage with him. His name was Quentin, but he never called him that.

Summary
Stage magic duo Quentin and Julia are contestants in a reality TV competition. Among their opponents are Eliot and Margo, who Quentin is familiar with from his first year at Brakebills, as well as Marina and Pete, who Julia has some bad history with from her time performing street magic. Eliot decides that his best chance at winning the competition is to fake a developing romance with Quentin to gain the audience’s favor. Shenanigans ensue.

Here he was, at Hogwarts. Quentin had dreamed of being a student here forever. He could feel the magic thrumming in the air, could see it in the lights twinkling in the ceiling.
He felt a tickle on the back of his neck, and he looked to the table of green and silver ties. Quentin forced himself to not look to the ground, and his brown eyes locked with a set of hazel ones. Even at this distance, he could see the intensity within, a sparkle of excitement as they swept over him, head to foot and back up again. Quentin’s breath hitched and he wiped his suddenly damp palms on his robes.
Hazel Eyes also had full dark hair, short, wavy and slightly mussed, with a stray curl or two falling over his forehead. Quentin took in his strong jaw, full lips, a tiny cleft in his chin, and a slightly loosened tie peeking out above the neck of his robe. He exuded the kind of effortless, lazy sexiness that Quentin knew he couldn’t embody in one finger on his best day.
Hazel Eyes made no attempt to hide his appraisal of Quentin. A slow smile spread across his lips as he stared back at him, his look full of promise and intent that Quentin wasn’t sure he could handle. But I sure would love to try, Quentin thought.

A story in multiple parts.
In the beginning, Eliot is old. His life really hasn't gone as planned, not unexpectedly--we know how Eliot is. But, as it turns out, there's a way to fix things, to revise his life. And Margo knows what's best for him; she really does. Even if he doesn't know it himself.
When he reaches Quentin, things aren't as simple as they seem. When you're two people at once in a world that seems entirely un-magical, nothing is really ever simple.
And Quentin, as we know is never a simple human to deal with. His protective friend has a lot of things to say when she finds out he's been seduced by Eliot Waugh, talented fashion student and total disaster human that no one should trust.
It turns out there was a reason Eliot was able to come here, and it's just like everything in his life--completely fucking tragic and complicated. But things slowly start to shift sideways, and there's hope in the strangest of places, and perhaps, magic as well.
This is a story with: a whole bunch of feelings, explicit sex scenes because that's how I do, lots of Queliot, all the Queliot, characters slightly OC sometimes just because it's a different universe and there are no rules.
