“How long until earthfall J?” Toni asks, hands steady on the wheel and mind whirling.
“If the current rate of propulsion is kept, less than an hour,” JARVIS tells her promptly. “The vessel is large, fast, and does not seem to be attempting to maintain any level of true stealth. Radio contact will be possible in five to ten minutes, Miss.”
Toni, having been enjoying a leisurely drive down the scenic route back to the Compound, is just under an hour away even if she speeds significantly. That’s unacceptable.
“I’ll be there in six,” Toni tells him even as she pushes the seat back a bit from the dash. “Scramble the Legion, get Rhodey and Vision on alert, and send a ping to Panthro. Don’t tell them to assemble just … to be ready to if we have to.”
“Of course, Miss,” JARVIS answers promptly.
Even without her hands on the wheel the car doesn’t so much as sway off course.
JARVIS has, as always, anticipated her every need.

Tony digs the heel of his palm into his right eye as he listens to the ring on the other end of the line. He tries to sync his breathing to the sound, but it’s a useless attempt. His nerves only fray more and more by the second as he listens to the third, then the fourth, then the--
Suddenly it cuts off. He wonders with a jolt at first if the call dropped, but it hasn’t. A crackling sound fills his ear. It’s a person. A person breathing.
“Kid?” Tony hears himself say.

Maria taught him from early age how to wear masks like a second skin, how to work the press, how to smile for the cameras even if his world is crumbling around him, how to hide his weaknesses from the spotlight.
It was by no means intentional, but that's what he learned anyway.
Because they had managed to successfully fool the world into thinking all was well in the Stark home, when nothing could be further from the truth. Not when Howard was out more than he was in, not when Maria coughed up flowers on a semiregular basis.
Stark men may be made of iron, but it takes far more than that to carry on when it came to the Hanahaki disease.
