Summary
A railway track winds its way across the tundra’s white plateau, the iron struts only kept company by frost flowers, snowflakes, and the twinkling, cloudless night. The horizon stretches away, flat and aimless. Mountains withdraw to the very distant edge of seeing, hesitant to broach such lorn surrounds. The land dwells in isolation; a quiescent desert, boundless and barren bar two tiny figures lost in its midst.
Little crystals of ice fleck Ren's fur as he flicks an ear against the air's sting; Martyn paces the side of the track, huffing out breaths into cupped hands to keep his fingers from stiffening up. His lips are practically blue yet, Martyn being Martyn, he’s still grinning undaunted. "Now this is going to be a bit of a tricky manoeuvre to pull off, but I reckon we've got the grit, we're pretty hardcore by now."
In which Martyn and Ren do not get run over by a train, though not for lack of trying.

Ren was sixteen, still a child by human standard, but to the cruel scientists old enough.
The dog hybrid would be striped, and strapped down to a cold mettle table, the muzzle they kept over his mouth, biting into his face from the position.
Silent tears would slide down his face as they poked and prodded him.
He tried to defend himself. He bit one of the scientists, that's how he ended up with the muzzle.
When they would strap him to the table, they would take his blood from him.
The needles hurt.
The lights hurt.
The muzzle made his face ached.

Skulk is a death sentance. The only way to help is to cut around it. And too much of Ren's arm, above the elbow, was just ripped off by what looked like more a chainsaw than a creature.
Doc fights tears because there's people, he fights tears because he's in public, he fights tears because this is an emergency and he needs to calm down.
Or, Ren gets in a brawl, part of his arm gets ripped off by a skulk-infected dog. He needs an amputation.

When he gets to Ren, the dog hybrid hesitates, but takes one after Scar smiles happily when Doc takes a cookie.
Ren bites the inside of his cheek.
He should not eat this, it has chocolate in it. Something that can kill a dog, but makes dog hybrids like him feel sick.
He eats it anyway, not wanting to offend the vex hybrid.
About ten minutes into the meeting Ren’s heart is racing. It feels like he ran four laps around the doc’s perimeter without stopping for a break, and his stomach hurts.
