If I had to state the core assumptions going in, I'd say that a) Sherlock's difficult and always has been, b) Sherlock and Mycroft love each other, but it's always been complicated, c) Sherlock absolutely does love Mary and uses the word with both knowledge and intent, d) Magnussen's gloating over his torment of Janine really is the last straw for Sherlock, e) Sherlock's involvement with women is growing--but is still quite undefined and amorphous.
Anyway. More than usual, this one is what it is.
