Almost immediately Ruby hears the sharp screech of the kitchen window, looking back to see Yang sliding every lock to secure it in place. Violet eyes catch silver ones, and the expression in them is so unbefitting of Yang. So foreign.

Ruby stiffens, just a little bit, but enough to be seen as an answer. Cinder nods mutely, turning back toward the edge of the rooftop.
“A kid sent to do the dirty work of hundreds who couldn’t,” Cinder clicks her tongue. “So many years, so many lives, so many heroes. They look to you for answers you don’t have–and why would you? You’re barely grown, and you still have so much more to learn. Is it desperation? Fatigue? Do they run from it so you can blunt the blow? Why do they put it all on you?”
Her hand comes up again, the one that’s battered and bruised, but still so clearly human. Her fingers play with the edge of her hood, caressing the material like one would a lover. There’s a moment, just one, where Ruby thinks surely not, and then–
“Is it because of Mother?”
The hood is pulled back, hair let free, and a pale face caught beneath the moonlight above, and the light of the city below.
It’s like staring into a mirror.

But as tribes turn a blind eye to the pools of Grimm festering beneath their feet, it takes a girl barely escaping death to bring the silent war, far too foreign to their battle-stained minds, sharply into focus.

Ruby had very few fond memories of Christmas.
It wasn’t as if nothing could be looked back upon with positive emotions, even if they were dulled from what they had been before.
As an adult, however, it was hard for her to look back on these memories with anything outside of a simmering anger. It would come in waves, as most things did these days when recalling the past; never quite dying down despite the time elapsed.
It was the first Christmas after Salem had been released from her curse, and here she was sitting alone in her room and reminiscing about things that shouldn’t have mattered over a decade later.

Being stuck in Vale after stopping a Robbery commited by a local Crime Lord certainly didn't help make things simpler.
