This is a story about the incredible characters that are Dina and Ellie. They are in a time where cordyceps did end the world in 2013, but in their reality, present-day things aren't so tragic. Joel never gets attacked by the WLF. Dina and Jesse have ended their relationship on semi-amicable terms and there isn't a bundle of joy waiting to make a surprise appearance. This is simply a tale of two young women in passionate love and trying to figure out this dystopian world together over the course of their relationship.

Summary
When Ellie Williams gets in trouble with the law after spending the last year between care homes, she gets cut a deal. Either carry out her parole working on a ranch in the middle of butt-fuck nowhere Jackson County, or face time in Juvie. It's a no-brainer, an easy decision. At least, that's what she thinks before she meets the owner's fiery daughter, the stoner ranch hand and her own past demons in the shape of a horse.
An AU! in which Ellie is a troubled kid working as a ranch hand, and Dina is a seemingly entitled trick rider, and they both learn to let the other in.

After three days with no sign of him, she decides to sneak out and try to save him herself. When Joel finally does come home, it's to receive word that his kid is missing and so he heads right back out to go find her before she runs into danger. Because if there's one thing they can both agree on, it's that the world outside the walls of Jackson is stock-full of dangers.

“And it still doesn’t change that your age is 14 years old,” Joel says with a raised eyebrow. “You don’t know what all is out there, Ellie.”
“Oh, like infected? Because I’m pretty sure I could handle myself there,” she says, gritting her teeth.
“There’s way worse shit than infected,” he says cryptically, making Ellie scoff. “And your immunity won’t save you from getting ripped apart.”
“Right,” she mutters. It’s a control tactic, she thinks. Sure, there are some bad people in the world, but infected are probably a way bigger threat. There’s a long pause where they both just stare each other down, Ellie just as stubborn as the man who raised her, both unwilling to back down from this fight.
or, ellie is 14 now and experiencing some major growing pains.

Joel could see Ellie’s blood on Abby's boots. He felt sick. Abby stood before him and Joel looked up at her, trying to hide his fury, because maybe they would show mercy. “I know why you’re here.” Joel confronted her, his breath still panicked. “Kill me. It was me.” Joel begged. “Kill me instead.”
TLDR// ellie is the one that almost dies in the beginning of the second game. we still go to seattle, but this time, it's joel on a revenge mission, and ellie's the one chasing after him.
