There’s an anger in him Primrose doesn’t recognize, one she never thought would be seen on the face she once knew as House Azelhart’s gardener. It’s ugly, but such emotions always are. Primrose does not fear him, she never has, but caution must be exercised here. The magic she senses from him is far different than her own, from what Cyrus has shown her. Magic oft bears the intent of its user, and all Primrose senses is bloodlust. Cold, raw, unabated bloodlust.

There’s an odd level of intimacy between Mattias and Simeon for two people who share an amount mutual distrust. It started with Mattias finding himself comfortably sprawling out across a piece of Simeon’s expensive furniture while they drank together, and from there was a gradual escalation of closeness. Banter, countless what if statements, some touching—all adding up again and again until it was a nearly nightly routine for Simeon to eventually get up after two or three glasses of wine and make his way over to the other man to sit atop him and allow his hands and his mouth to wander.
Mattias doesn’t trust him any further than he could throw him. He doesn’t know why he allows this, especially so easily, but he prefers not to reflect on it.

Suspecting from the get-go that his involuntary leave is a cooked-up plot to get him out of the way, Cyrus Albright chooses to spend his sabbatical in Atlasdam and sets up shop as an independent researcher, hoping to decipher the mysteries of a missing book. But a spirited young dancer arrives and convinces him to assist her as she seeks revenge against the men who killed her father.
A somewhat canon-divergent/not-quite-an-AU combination of Cyrus's and Primrose's paths, replete with spoilers for each, plus a romance, partially inspired by film-noir plots (but in a canon Orsterra setting). Chapter 1 is probably not really rated M, but others will be.

AT RISE: (the then un-named) MATTIAS wanders through it's streets, a torn blue coat draped over his form and carrying a worn-down scepter. He walks aimlessly, but he steps across the stage with confidence and experience. He stops to hear the chatters, rumours about Hornburg, of rival families, of upset aristocrats, and smiles

It’s hard to imagine Simeon miscalculating so gravely. The only other possibility is that this was the plan all along, but it couldn’t have been. Simeon wouldn’t do this to him. He is more than toy to him; maybe not by much, but by enough.
