“It’s kind of funny.” Zuko chuckled.
“Is it?” Sokka deadpanned.
“Yes actually, think about it.” Zuko looked at them conspiratorially: “My dad gave me an impossible task, that he never intended for me to complete, thinking he got rid of me. And then I actually found you.” He pointed vaguely in Aangs direction. “I returned to the fire nation and he had to pretend not to despise me.” His chuckles turned to manic laughter. “I confronted him on the day of the black sun.” He added, realizing he hadn’t told them that yet: “I told him he was cruel and what he did was wrong and that I was going to join you guys and help take him down.”
“So your dad tried to kill you?” Sokka asked.
Zuko sobered at this question. He cleared his throat awkwardly: “Yes?”
Sokka looked him dead in the eyes: “That’s rough, buddy.”

Aka, my take on how the Chit Sang would reveal what Zuko stood for to the Gaang + Hakoda, and how it would be seen. I did this all while listening to "Things We Lost In The Fire" by Bastille on repeat. (I had to, at some point, make an obligatory Gaang finds out about the scar with added spice!)

The thing about rumors, though, was that they were often based on the truth.Or, the first time Suki meets Zuko he burns down her village. The second time Suki meets Zuko he helps rescue her from prison. All things considered, she thinks they're pretty even.

Summary
Ozai had never been a loving father, not only to Zuko. He just didn’t have it in him to love. He desired power, so he respected Azula - needed her. He did not love her.
But that was exactly the difference between the two siblings, while Azula had been in the presence of indifference - a possible liking - Zuko wasn’t just subject to a lack of love. No, he faced hatred. Pure disdain.
But it was three years ago that Ozai first left a visible mark on the boy, leaving a scar for the world to see. Shaming him, hurting him and challenging him to death, at once. Publicly humiliating him in a duel meant as a display of respect between two matched opponents, rivals.
And since then, Ozai had grown in aggression, in his abuse.
That's why Zuko had to leave.
OR: In this universe, Zuko was never banished. Instead, he was subject to three more years of abuse, and it's this abuse that causes him to come to his senses, all on his own, and join the Avatar.

Zuko's gaze was almost delirious as he looked up at Iroh.
“Tired...wish I was dead,” Zuko whispered. Sokka almost dropped his bowl in shock; only Toph’s quick action saved it from smashing into the floor.
Iroh’s eyes were wide, reflecting the firelight. “Nephew,” he breathed out. “What- do not speak like this-“
“Should have died on that stage, Uncle...” Zuko murmured, eyes hazy with fever. Sokka shifted uncomfortably, knowing the other boy would have hated for them to hear this. “Wish he just... killed me and got it over with...”-or, Zuko gets himself burned protecting the GAang. In his delirium, he reveals more about himself than he'd have liked.
