She was greeted by lines of fresh, blue ink; that was Hilda’s handwriting, definitely, hastily scrawled in the time Johanna had spent talking to Alfur. She only used that pen for things she considered important, or special, enough to bring out the hard-to-find ink that matched her hair. That alone made Johanna’s chest almost burst with worry, but it was what those words meant, what she read in that empty hallway, under the light, that really shattered her.
Dear Mum, it began, the letters shaky and uneven. I’m sorry, about everything.
Johanna doesn't know what to do; her daughter snuck out again, and saw herself die, and now she's hiding away in her room and won't come out. Until a small letter, shoved through the crack under the door, changes everything.
