“Ok, I guess. He was really cool about it and listened to me explain how I feel about gender and what it’s like, but he had this…look on his face that I… couldn’t understand? I don’t know if he was secretly judging me or what but there was something he didn’t say, and I just kept thinking about it and over-thinking about it and once I realised I liked him I started worrying that he’s, like, freaked out or something. I don’t know. I’m just scared that if I’m not…manly enough, he won’t take me seriously anymore now that he knows. It’s weird. I haven’t worried about that since I was a kid and wanted my dad’s friends to call me by my real name but now…”
“Because he matters to you, Sokka. You want to know he respects you, all of you now that he knows the truth.” Her grip tightened, her voice becoming forceful and protective. “And he will if he’s a real friend, and especially if you’re meant to be something more.”

Sokka blinks. Why is Azula calling him in the middle of a weekday? “Hello?” he answers.
“You need to go to the hospital.”
Azula, the queen of without preamble. Sokka’s used it, but that doesn’t mean he’s not wary of it. “Why? What do you know that I don’t?”
She sniffs. It isn’t her usual sharp sniff of disdain. “I’m in Tokyo, and Mai and Ty Lee are in Beijing,” she explains.
Sokka’s stomach drops. Azula never gives context for her demands. “What happened?” he asks, dread clawing at the back of his throat.

They hadn’t known Lava Springs Country Club was owned by the uncle of Drama Queen and her hench-brother until they arrived this morning and Azula was immediately peacocking, alternating between smirking at Katara and glaring at the rest of them: Sokka, the other East High first-liners, Teo, and Yue.
There’d been a whole thing, this past semester: Katara instantly being weirdly attached to the new student, Yue, and then coming out as a musical theater performer. Stuff happened, the hockey team and the drama department almost drove their entire high school to a civil war, then stuff got resolved, and Katara and Yue starred in the spring musical. Hakoda cried happy tears at his daughter opening up a new aspect of herself.
Sokka’s loose on the details; he mostly kept his head down and concentrated on hockey, because he’s always been an athlete and will forever be an athlete. What can he say? He’s a simple guy.

It’s a bold question, and people sit up straighter at the sight of Zuko smiling. He’s only done that twice before this semester; one time was when he walked into class on the tail end of a phone call that, according to Isa Dangelo, ended with a ‘Love you.’ It ignited speculation about the person on the other end of the phone call for an month week.
“Someone else already made a similar argument to me,” Zuko says.
“Who?” Nadiya asks.
“My husband.”
There are multiple audible gasps, but before anyone can ask a follow-up of the professor who’s been scrupulously private thus far, he glances at the watch face on the inside of his wrist. “That’s time,” he says, and there’s no room for argument. “I’ll see you all on Wednesday.”
