Summary
Tommy flies down the hallway, tiptoeing only onto the front of his feet. He glances behind him to make sure he’s not being followed. At the corner, he slows to peek around the edge. A man stands with his back turned, adorned with a brown uniform worn only by the country’s guards and law personnel. Tommy grins, recognizing the curly head of hair. Walking even quieter, he slowly creeps up behind him.
Then he leaps. “Wilbur!”
Wilbur whirls around just as gangly arms and legs wrap around his torso. The weight catches him off guard and he just barely gets his hands out to brace himself before he crashes into the wall.
“Tommy,” Wilbur sighs. “I told you to stop doing that. You’re gonna end up with a blade through the middle of your chest.”
“That’d be kind of funny.”
“Nothing about that seems funny in the slightest.”

His hand shakes as he pushes on the release for the door. He’d get out and take some oxygen to hold him off until—
The door doesn’t budge.
He pushes again, then again. He throws himself against it with enough force to bruise his ribs, but it remains still. Tommy can’t breathe. He can’t think. A cough turns into a gag and he spits out a string of saliva. Over the ringing in his ears, he can hear soft groans getting closer and his own futile wheezing. His vision swims and he blinks harshly to clear it. Dark forms waver in out of focus strangely.
Zombies. He needs to fight them. Or he’ll die. He knows this, yet his arm doesn’t move. His legs remain stuck. His chest rattles. The door meets his shoulder harshly as he falls against it, a thud as his head collides. He slumps to the ground.

As he waits for a response, Tommy listens to the storm’s attempt to break itself into the store. Or at least that’s what it sounds like. He eyes the door as it rattles, wondering if it will hold.
“You—Tommy, you’re lost in your own apartment?”
Maybe he’s not waking up at all. Tommy runs a hand through his hair, tugging the roots. “I left, man. I got hungry, wanted a snack, and now I’m lost.”
”What?”

“Hello?” Tommy says.
The stranger looks at the frog in Tommy’s hands. “That’s a beautiful Rana temporaria.”
“I’m sorry, what?”
They grin like they’ve told a joke Tommy doesn’t understand. “Rana temporaria. It’s the scientific name for the common frog.” They gesture to the frog. “It’s got beautiful patterning.”
Tommy looks down at the frog. It’s that weird sort of shade in between green and brown, and there are a few dark splotches scattered across its back. One of them looks a bit like a dick.
He holds the frog out for the stranger to see and smiles. “It’s got cock and balls on its back.”

The fae was tall. Much taller than Tommy, and probably anyone else in the village for that matter. Hair the color of dark oak spilled over his forehead in tumbling curls. Flecks of gold dotted his cheeks like freckles, sitting underneath a pair of knowing eyes that seemed to flash between shades of earth and honey. His tall frame was draped in the most expensive-looking clothes Tommy had ever seen—flowing fabric in shades of snow and sunlight billowed in the light breeze. And there was so much jewelry. Gold bands decorated his arms, dangling gems decorated his pointed ears, and a shimmering gold circlet rested on his forehead.
Past the beauty though, there was danger. His nails were pointed, his teeth too sharp. When Tommy tried to look him in the eyes, his head grew fuzzy, as if perceiving the fae directly wasn’t something he was supposed to attempt.
He was smiling as he looked over Tommy.
“Are you lost?” He asked in that same lyrical voice.
