Yet there is one account above all others which I have censored quite shamefully, willfully, and without an honourable motivation — nor with any particular grace. In my defence, it was not entirely unnecessary, and at the time I was both inexperienced in the field of biography and lacking the honour of Mr Holmes's blunt perspective. I refer, of course, to the case of Mr Jonathan Small and the Agra treasure, the case I entitled, 'The Sign of the Four'.

Izzy still doesn't precisely know how to feel about work this morning, but it's somewhere between scorn and dread.
He's already encountered the new General Manager's influence; Edward's unilateral decision last week to change his signature block to read co-General Manager, for fuck's sake, which Izzy had had to push back on. Izzy's also had actual contact with him; brief, over Teams. His impression of the man wasn't precisely flattering.
Day one of the High Income Tax Policy and Enforcement Branch, and Izzy doesn't really have any idea what to expect.

Israel Hands has been the Executive Officer to Edward Teach, General Manager of High Income Tax Enforcement, for a long time. He knows this job, he knows Edward, and he knows how to keep his life separate from work - for the most part.
And then the branch is restructured to include Stede Bonnet, General Manager of Tax Policy, and his team of fucking clowns. Suddenly Izzy has two bosses, irritating coworkers, and a rapidly disintegrating line between the personal and the professional.
Not to mention Edward's behaving more erratically than usual.
(It's a romcom).

I work in an office so I tend to avoid office AUs, I don't want work sneaking into my escapism... BUT I gave this one a try and oh boy I'm so glad I did. I laughed at all the universally recognised office quirks without ever cringing. Stede is a delight of a manager, Izzy and Ed are so perfect in tone, the smut is HOT, and it has my favourite thing - lots of Izzy being annoyed at how much he likes Stede. The writing is tight and the feels, oh man the feels! ❤️🔥

That is, until Stede Bonnet returns from the grave with the marooned crew of the Revenge to interrupt and complicate their reconciliation.

“You should talk to him,” Izzy says in a low voice, resting a hand on Ed’s arm. “Privately.”
“What?” Ed scowls and flicks his eyes over to Stede, who is pretending not to be able to hear them from where he is admiring Mary’s painting.Izzy sighs. “It’s unresolved, Edward. Trust me, this isn’t the kind of thing to let fester.” He squeezes Ed’s arm gently. “Talk to him. Get the answers you need.”
Ed’s shoulders relax minutely, the hard set of his jaw loosening. Izzy crosses the cabin to Stede. He snaps his fingers and holds out his palm to Bonnet. “Knife.” He shoots a glance to Edward. “You, too.” Stede pulls his ornate dagger in its sheath from his belt and hands it over without a fuss. Ed does the same a bit more begrudgingly. “Don’t fucking kill each other.”Series

Playing with both the crossover of genre conventions between Stede's universe and Izzy and Ed's original one, but basically doing a deep dive into trauma response and navigating complex relationships between the crew and Izzy when Izzy is forced into a position where he has to share revealing and intimate things about himself. Lots of focus on the aftermath of abuse and trauma, playing with freeze responses and the way the different crewmembers navigate all this.

I'm consuming OFMD fics like a lunatic atm and there's been some CORKERS, but this one in particular has lingered. Fucking stellar themes of trauma, especially the kind you normalise and internalise and believe to be the whole world. Clearly deeply researched. Heed the tags, it gets heavy, but super satisfying.
I'm officially an Izzy convert now. Unexpected but I'm into it.
