Summary
Within a few feet of Steve, Bucky drops quietly to his knees. Tonight, especially, he really wishes he could bang them on the hard wooden floor, make it hurt, start the punishment already, but they can’t risk the noise. He hangs his head.
“Steve.” The whisper is pulled out of Bucky by desperation and panic. He’s not sure Steve hears, but his master drops soundlessly next to him, bringing his face close to Bucky’s.
“Buck,” Steve rumbles, lifting Bucky’s chin to look him in the eyes. “Are you OK? What’s going on, Buck.”
“No,” Bucky chokes, shaking his head against Steve’s hand. “I mean, later,” he amends a second later. “Right now, you have to punish me. I’ve been such a bad boy.”
“But Buck…” Steve’s gorgeous face looks troubled and hesitant. Bucky cuts him off.
“Seriously, Stevie…seriously, sir,” he whispers. “I’ve been really, really, really bad. You need to teach me a lesson. And sir…” Bucky looks pointedly, desperately, at Steve. “Make it hurt. Please.”

Summary
Steve is really furious right now. For almost two years, since the Chitauri invasion, he’s been working for SHIELD, thinking he was doing the right thing, taking down bad guys and protecting people. And now it turns out they’re building giant death machines, like the Valkyrie only bigger, with just as many mass casualties only maybe more “targeted,” with SHIELD deciding who’s worthy of judgement.
As Steve rides up the elevator by himself to the above-ground floors in the Triskelion, the conversation with Fury repeats over and over in his mind. There’s one sentence that stands out.
Greatest generation? You guys did some nasty stuff.
Immediately Steve’s eidetic memory surfaces that whole host of images from the war that he put aside to pursue the argument. All of them include Bucky.
Bucky.

“Seriously, Steve,” he says, voice emphatic. “My recon indicates dozens of Hydra personnel in this building, we’ll need stealth and surprise before unleashing the brute force. And Steve…” Bucky leans his face closer. “This is a lethal mission, no disabling, disarming, or taking into custody.”
Now Steve is really hesitant. He kind of acknowledged this possibility in the back of his mind when he got Bucky’s text, but hearing it said out loud is tough. The order goes directly against current Avengers protocol and against his position as Captain America.
“Bucky…” he starts, but the other man cuts him off.
“No,” Bucky says flatly. “There’s a squad of Hydra soldiers in there protecting at least six scientists and two handlers, all eight of whom were present at Ideal Federal Savings Bank last April.” He takes a step back before continuing. “You know…when I got wiped on Pierce’s orders before being sent to kill you at the Triskelion.”
Steve stands stock still. He can’t deny that this info is a punch in the gut.

Steve takes a deep breath as he and Bucky, hand in hand, pass Court Street Bagels and turn left down Bergen toward the Brooklyn Inn. The late afternoon October air is golden and the trees, yellow and crimson and orange, sway in the gentle breeze.
Normally he and his husband would take Dodger on this venture, but the bar doesn’t allow pets, even those as cute as their dog, so they’ve left him behind in their brownstone on Cranberry Street.
They’ll take him out for a long walk later this evening. This walk is just for the two of them.

On the wall behind the old armchair is a large monthly calendar with CHEVROLET in big letters under a watercolor print. Steve has to squint to make out the month, which is September, flanked on either side by “1938” in slightly smaller print.
September 1938.
Steve’s mind is spinning. Is this a dream? Or has he traveled back to his own past? Or an alternate timeline? Or a different universe? He has no idea. He never thought any of this was possible before, even when he was fighting Schmidt for the tesseract back on the Valkyrie, but Thanos’ battle for the infinity stones taught him differently. And whatever he touched on that glowing metal box back in Queens has sent him to this…Other Place.
“A-tisket a-tasket, she took my yellow basket, and if she doesn’t bring it back…”
A sweet baritone voice starts singing along with the far-off radio in the other room. Steve sits up straight on the couch and a pang goes through his gut.
Bucky.

He’s coming back down the aisle a few minutes later, calling over his shoulder to Nat, when he turns his head just in time to avoid bumping into 3C, who’s standing there, looking at Bucky intensely but maybe also a little uncertainly.
Bucky stops and looks up into 3C’s face. He has to physically restrain himself from swallowing hard, because 3C is a Specimen of the Highest Order. Tall, a few inches taller than Bucky’s six feet, dressed in head-to-toe Tom Ford business casual with dark blond hair sweeping across his forehead and curling at his very expensive shirt collar, piercing blue eyes, full lips, and a neatly trimmed, well-cared-for beard.
Further investigation reveals glints of silver in both hair and beard, and now Bucky really needs to go lie down. Instead, he raises his eyebrows as if to say, Well?

Something wells up in Steve’s heart thinking about how Bucky is his, will always be his, but he’s got no time to wallow in this particular feelings pit. The school leaders, accompanied by a handful of teachers (exactly the same the teachers who, according to Bucky, exited Pierce’s office on that day in December, Steve notes) and a sleek middle-aged man in a dark suit, walk through a side door and onto the dais in front of the altar.
All three hundred students and the remaining teachers in the pews stand as one and wait, silent and expectant, for their next direction. Pierce steps forward to a microphone and a podium that have been placed in the center of the dais.

Now that they’ve gotten so close to Bucky, Steve’s thoughts and feelings have gone back into overdrive. At the beginning of their search, Steve was coming off the drama and violence of the Battle of the Triskelion and recovering from his injuries, and poured his heart into finding Bucky. The string of disappointments and false leads frustrated him, dimmed his zeal a bit, but this new development has brought everything surging back, all the feelings, all the memories.
They wash over him in a flood as he stands in this field in Bumfuck, New York, looking up at the stars. The life he had with Bucky before the war…becoming Captain America and rescuing Bucky at Kreischberg…losing Bucky from that train in the Alps…bringing the Valkyrie down and all those years of darkness in the ice…adapting to the twenty-first century and finding Bucky again, only to lose him, wondering if he’ll ever find him again…or if he even wants to be found.
The breeze ruffles Steve’s hair as he drops his head and clenches his fists.
Buck.

“This is Steve, one of my...co-workers,” Barton says teasingly. “Steve, this is James Barnes, the tattoo artist I was telling you about.”
Steve has heretofore been dumbstruck as he looks at James Barnes, because he is the most beautiful human Steve’s ever met, with the possible exception of Peggy 70 years ago. His long dark hair is pulled into a messy bun at the back of his head, and it frames the face of an angel, with a long-aquiline nose, a wide sensitive mouth, cheekbones to cry over, and a jawline that could kill at twenty paces, covered with a light layer of stubble.
And most importantly, large grey-blue eyes that light up and scan over Steve as Barnes shakes his hand.
“Nice to meet you, Steve,” he says in his husky voice, and this is where Steve has to remind himself how to be a functioning human being in a society.
“Good to meet you too, James,” Steve says, his voice only cracking a little. James’ hand is warm and strong and dry, and Steve could happily hold it forever. He does let go after a few seconds like a normal person, however.
“Bucky. Call me Bucky,” says James. “Everyone does.”
“OK...Bucky,” Steve says, and this time his voice behaves.

Steve nods miserably.
“What do you need,” Bucky presses.
“Buck, please,” says Steve after a moment. “Just…please.”
Bucky smiles and cradles Steve’s cheek in his metal hand.
“I’ve got you, baby,” he murmurs, as he leans in to kiss Steve’s lips.

Steve shakes his head. “I carried you through the portal,” he says softly. “And you were in really bad shape and I was walking forward, wondering what to do. And it was pitch dark and I blundered into some sort of pond and got us all wet.” He looks down ruefully at the soaked pajamas clinging to his legs and rubs his hand down Bucky’s shoulder and arm.
“...and when I laid you down here,” Steve finishes. “You went all pale and still and then you gasped for air and sat up.”

“What’s going on, Buck,” Steve whispers against Bucky’s ear. “Is it about Harvard? I heard you talking to Dumb and Dumber about it at dinner.”
Bucky huffs against Steve’s collarbone. “Yeah. Pierce made me come to his office this afternoon and withdraw all my other applications. Including Stanford. So I’ll be at Harvard and my dad’s making me study Econ and you...you’ll be...” he chokes up and can’t go on, just tenses his entire body and hopes Steve understands.
“Yeah, I know, I’ll be in Berkeley,” says Steve gently. “But that’s months away, though, we’ll deal with that later.” His arms tighten around Bucky’s waist.
“And the next three weeks with my fucking family, Steve, it’s brutal.”
“Yeah, I know that, too,” Steve responds, and he does — he was there last summer when Bucky was fighting with his dad all the time about this year at Shield. “At least you can text me and we can FaceTime, right?” Steve’s face is soft, the hint of a smile on his lips.
**In which at the end of the fall semester, Bucky duels with Headmaster Pierce and loses, and finds some solace amid the ecstasy and pain of his nightly encounter with Steve.

When they’ve cleaned up the dinner dishes, Steve and Bucky decide to walk up to JP Licks on the other side of Southie to get some ice cream. It’s kind of a hike, but it’s a beautiful evening and they’ve got nothing else to do. They’re headed down Sixth and almost to the Food Emporium when Bucky stops.
“Steve,” he says, his voice sounding both broken and longing.
Steve stops too, and turns to look at Bucky. His eyes are shiny and the corner of his mouth is twitching.
“Bucky? Whatsa matter?” Steve’s voice is urgent, worried. Reflexively he reaches out to grab Bucky’s left shoulder and a jolt goes through them both, remembering last weekend.
They’re standing there, frozen in place, looking at each other, when they hear it.

Summary
From behind the oak tree issues a thin wisp of light grey smoke. It’s only just visible, and only then if you know to look for it.
Steve slows his pace even more and as he approaches a bench just off the path leading to his house, he almost involuntarily sits on it, leaning forward, hands clasped, elbows on thighs, and stares out at the tree. The bench is almost equidistant between the nearest light poles so he’s sitting in relative darkness.
He sits quietly for a minute or two and then...
“Hey, man.” His best friend Sam comes and sits next to him on the bench. He’s also still wearing his practice gear and his dark, handsome face glows with sweat in the dim light.
“Hey,” Steve says. He continues to watch the curls of smoke across the green. Sam follows his gaze, sees what he’s glaring at, and looks back at him, eyebrows raised.
“You sure you know what you’re doing?”
“Nope,” answers Steve after a short pause, not turning his head but grinning a lopsided smile, a luxury he rarely allows himself in this hellhole.

Bucky can feel Steve fidgeting uneasily as he takes the pose and he knows instinctively that Steve is thinking the same thing. Earlier this summer, Steve had gotten an art commission — his very first — from Joe’s Bar over on Johnson Street in Brooklyn, and they’d wanted him to paint a real classy dame in a red dress, curvy, full-length, everything smooth with no wrinkles.
This? This is kooky.
In the next thirty seconds it gets even kookier.
“Look straight at me,” Leyendecker directs. “Don’t smile. And think of a big secret you’re keeping.”
Bucky squirms in his chair a little. His asshole is still a little sore from last night, and that certainly has everything to do with a big secret he’s been keeping.
