The Howlies burst out onstage half an hour later, starting their set with a song apparently called “I HATE YOU.” Steve’s in his jeans and Docs but with a black net shirt over a white tank top, his hair in spikes and black kohl rimming those amazing eyes. His thin arms and shoulders are corded with sinewy muscle, a big purple bruise showing angry and dark against the pale skin of his left bicep, and he’s wearing thick leather cuffs on both wrists.
Dear Lord.
He’s beautiful and he’s absolutely magnetic and his low, resonant voice roars through the small space and tears its way through Bucky’s gut.

Steve is still angry as fuck, so he doesn’t mince words. “Why won’t you look at me?” he demands, stepping forward, fists clenched. “Why won’t you talk to me? Why won’t you touch me?”
His voice almost breaks on the touch, and now his anger toward Bucky twists quickly into despair and self-hatred. “It’s because I’m a freak, isn’t it,” he says more softly. “I’m a huge, disgusting monster and you can’t even bear to look at me anymore.”
He sighs and drops his head, relaxing his hands. This is it, he thinks. This is the end of everything.

Receiving the note earlier had sent a jolt through Kite’s traitorous flesh. It was nothing new, his feelings for Jem or his monumental ambivalence about them. Part of him always wanted to put a thousand miles between them when he saw Jem, and the other part always wanted to crawl inside him and never come out. Now that he’s passed the mantle of the presidency to someone else, especially a beloved friend and colleague, Steve feels a weight lifted from his shoulders. It’s almost a physical sensation — his spine feels longer and the ever-present tension in his chest seems to drain away.
Steve takes a deep breath and lets it out on an audible exhale. Out of the corner of his eye he sees Okoye, standing among the Secret Service cohort at the end of Former President Row and smiling at him.
“It’s better now, isn’t it,” murmurs Obama in the seat next to Steve. “You feel the relief.”
Steve nods, looks intently at the ground to hold back the tears that are welling up in his eyes.
“Yeah,” he sighs out, and then again. “Yeah, it really is.”

When he does, he bolts out of his chair in surprise.
“Bucky??” he exclaims.
Those blue-grey eyes, so sparkling and full of life ten years ago, are dull and unfocused now. A frown spreads over that generous mouth as the prisoner’s forehead wrinkles.

Steve settles in to finish his muffin and get back to Procreate and the new comic panel, where the Winter Soldier is stalking through a corridor to complete a mission.
The Winter Soldier.
Even thinking the name makes Steve shiver. It’s just so…good. And the back story is brilliant. A World War II veteran who loses his arm in a fall from a train in the Alps, captured and given a shiny indestructible arm by a covert Nazi organization called Hydra, then brainwashed to carry out missions through the Cold War.
It certainly puts his History minor to good use.

It’s only the second time Steve has heard this name out loud — Brock mentioned it, almost reluctantly, at the end of his proposition at the reunion, and quickly showed Steve a photo of a laughing young man in a tux standing next to him — but it still evokes a strange reaction in him, almost like some puzzle piece clicking into place or the chiming of a bell, deep and resonant, that echoes through his mind and reassures him that he’s here in this world for some higher purpose.
