The Howlies burst out onstage half an hour later, starting their set with a song apparently called “I HATE YOU.” Steve’s in his jeans and Docs but with a black net shirt over a white tank top, his hair in spikes and black kohl rimming those amazing eyes. His thin arms and shoulders are corded with sinewy muscle, a big purple bruise showing angry and dark against the pale skin of his left bicep, and he’s wearing thick leather cuffs on both wrists.
Dear Lord.
He’s beautiful and he’s absolutely magnetic and his low, resonant voice roars through the small space and tears its way through Bucky’s gut.

Steve is still angry as fuck, so he doesn’t mince words. “Why won’t you look at me?” he demands, stepping forward, fists clenched. “Why won’t you talk to me? Why won’t you touch me?”
His voice almost breaks on the touch, and now his anger toward Bucky twists quickly into despair and self-hatred. “It’s because I’m a freak, isn’t it,” he says more softly. “I’m a huge, disgusting monster and you can’t even bear to look at me anymore.”
He sighs and drops his head, relaxing his hands. This is it, he thinks. This is the end of everything.

Summary
Now that he’s passed the mantle of the presidency to someone else, especially a beloved friend and colleague, Steve feels a weight lifted from his shoulders. It’s almost a physical sensation — his spine feels longer and the ever-present tension in his chest seems to drain away.
Steve takes a deep breath and lets it out on an audible exhale. Out of the corner of his eye he sees Okoye, standing among the Secret Service cohort at the end of Former President Row and smiling at him.
“It’s better now, isn’t it,” murmurs Obama in the seat next to Steve. “You feel the relief.”
Steve nods, looks intently at the ground to hold back the tears that are welling up in his eyes.
“Yeah,” he sighs out, and then again. “Yeah, it really is.”

“Sitva?” repeats Steve in confusion. The Aramaic word for “winter” is hardly a common name. But as he says it, the prisoner’s head raises slowly, the curtain of hair parting so Steve can get a look at his face.
When he does, he bolts out of his chair in surprise.
“Bucky??” he exclaims.
Those blue-grey eyes, so sparkling and full of life ten years ago, are dull and unfocused now. A frown spreads over that generous mouth as the prisoner’s forehead wrinkles.
“Who the hell is Bucky?” he spits out in Aramaic.

The Winter Soldier.
Even thinking the name makes Steve shiver. It’s just so…good. And the back story is brilliant. A World War II veteran who loses his arm in a fall from a train in the Alps, captured and given a shiny indestructible arm by a covert Nazi organization called Hydra, then brainwashed to carry out missions through the Cold War.
It certainly puts his History minor to good use.

Summary
“Oh my god, Brock is married to James Barnes?” Sam leans forward in his chair, his eyes sparkling with surprise and excitement.
James Barnes.
It’s only the second time Steve has heard this name out loud — Brock mentioned it, almost reluctantly, at the end of his proposition at the reunion, and quickly showed Steve a photo of a laughing young man in a tux standing next to him — but it still evokes a strange reaction in him, almost like some puzzle piece clicking into place or the chiming of a bell, deep and resonant, that echoes through his mind and reassures him that he’s here in this world for some higher purpose.

Smiling, Maria finishes her cheese pastry, which is delicious. “Sometimes I miss field work,” she replies. “And…honestly? I’ve wanted to work with you since the Battle of New York, and especially since that Christmas party.”
A little pink flits across Steve’s cheeks at the mention of the party. But before he can respond, the door jingles and a thirty-something man ambles in. “Target acquired,” he says softly and unnecessarily. And just like that, they slide into their cover personas.

Steve frowns, kisses his boyfriend’s hair before disentangling himself and going over to pick up the StarkPhone. Theoretically it’s hack-proof, but that idea is being tested right now, given that, yes, the volume switch is off. There’s a name on the screen above a 212 number.

There’s a thin figure in a light jacket, sitting with its back turned, looking out at the water. The shield, round and whole again, is propped up against the bench by its side.
They walk forward toward the figure, who from the back looks a little old, a little bent, and Sam looks uncertainly at Bucky. Smiling with a confidence he doesn’t feel, Bucky jerks his head toward the figure. “Go on,” he says.
When they get closer, the figure turns his head, and a jolt races through Bucky’s gut.

It’s almost pitch dark in the church — there’s a moon tonight, but it’s a waning crescent and provides almost no light — but they can still make out three dark shapes advancing up the aisle toward the altar.
The Hydra agents are attempting stealth, but their tread is heavy on the threadbare aisle runner spread over the old wood floor. Beyond that, they’re muttering to each other, and they’re using a small bluish light to check the pews.
Fucking amateurs. Even Steve can be quieter than that, and he’s a goddamn supersoldier.
And Bucky…well. Nobody’s stealthier than Sergeant Barnes when he wants to be.
