Summary
Hence the turbulent emotions. Bucky loves Steve, loves him like a brother, but the dream has unsettled him and made him wonder. He is thus a little hesitant, a little quieter than usual as Steve greets him in the hall and they sit down to a lovely lunch in the hothouse. Steve dismisses the servants so they’re alone in light-filled space. They eat well, but at the end of the meal Steve notices Bucky’s reticence.
“Bucky, is everything alright? Are you in good health? Your family?” Steve inquires, edging his chair closer to Bucky’s and laying his hand on Bucky’s forearm in a gesture of concern.
“Yes, Steve, we are all in good health, thank you,” Bucky starts. He’s about to make some superficial excuse but then he looks up at Steve’s face, into his fathomless blue eyes which are full of worry and solicitude, and decides to tell him the truth.

It’s a sunny late-December day in Brooklyn Heights. Bucky comes out of the bedroom yawning. He raises his arms over his head to stretch, the hem of his well-worn Brooklyn Dodgers sweatshirt lifting to show the waistband of his lounge pants and an enticing slice of his Adonis belt peeking out from over them.
Looking affectionately at his husband from the comfort of the huge leather sofa, Steve grins and says, “Good morning, sweetheart.”

Summary
Steve and Bucky are lying in the hayloft of a barn on an abandoned farm somewhere outside of Vittel. They’re trying to keep quiet because the odds are about even that there are Hydra soldiers in the immediate vicinity. Even though it’s doubtful that the Hydra goons have Steve’s enhanced superserum hearing, the late October night outside is still and cold, and any noise they make could travel a decent distance across the barren fields.
Earlier this afternoon, the Howlies pulled a successful raid on a known Hydra base just outside Nancy, some miles north of here. They killed the CO and his staff and made off with a nice-size cache of Hydra weapons, a box of gold bullion and uncut diamonds, and a small, mysterious trunk with strange designs on it.
They were in the process of blowing up the base (merci fuckin beaucoup, Dernier!) when the mission started to go to shit.

“What if I told you that you won’t mess it up. That you can’t mess it up?” Natasha cocks her head at him and smiles, while Bucky nods vigorously.
“Really?” says Steve, still unsure.
“Yes, really,” both Bucky and Nat say at the same time, and then all three of them laugh.
“Will you trust us?” Bucky goes on, squeezing Steve’s hand. Steve looks at them lovingly and then back at Nat.
“Trust us…and let us take care of you,” she says a little more emphatically. “I know it’s hard for you to let go and give over control, but I think you’ll like it.”
At these words, Steve freezes up a little inside, because he really is the hugest control freak in the world, but a part of him is very intrigued and more than a little excited.
“OK,” he says, smiling at both of them. He takes a deep breath and exhales hard. “OK. So what’s next?”
Bucky’s smile is radiant. Natasha’s is smugger and a little more sphinx-like, but it’s clear she’s really happy too. She steps forward.
“Can we make you pretty?” she says, her voice blunt but loving.

The young woman turns to leave but spins on her heel near the door. She looks out into the hall, presumably to make sure no one is there, then turns back to look at Bucky.
“The, uh, lunch is, uh, pretty bland today,” she remarks in a soft voice with a strong northern Boston suburbs accent. “I’d, uh, really recommend using the salt.”
She looks at the tray and back at him pointedly, and then in a moment she’s gone and the lock slides home on the outside of the door.
Salt?
The automaton is momentarily confused, but soon dismisses her comment from its mind. After a few bites, Bucky starts to notice that the food is, indeed, very bland. He picks up the salt shaker on the tray and sprinkles it over the food.
Or tries to. The top comes off the shaker and a very small rolled-up piece of paper drops out onto Bucky’s plate.
Bucky looks down at his food in surprise. What the hell…
With some trepidation, Bucky picks up the paper and unrolls it. It’s covered with a paragraph of very small, very precise and beautiful handwriting. Somehow that writing looks familiar…

“Oh good, maybe you can fix him, because he’s obviously all screwed up.” Brock’s voice is contemptuous and he looks at Bucky with disgust. Bucky isn’t hurt by this — it’s not like he really cares about Rumlow in any way — but he starts to get really angry with his dismissive prejudice. Just because he’s in love with another man doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with him.
But he has no time to really get revved up and pissed off about this, because Zola grabs his arm and says firmly, “Come with me, Mr. Barnes.”

Behind him he can tell that Bucky is also reclothing himself, and he feels a little reassured about this too, that his sweetheart won’t be naked when he’s subject to the scrutiny of these fascist dickwads.
But there’s little to be reassured about in this current scenario. As far as Steve can tell, he and Bucky are well and truly fucked.

The forest is dark as the dusk settles, and the wind whistles softly through the trees. It’s not that cold, but Steve pulls his jacket closer around him as he moves further into the woods.
He’s not even a mile away from the inn when he sees it. A faint blue glow just visible through the trees. As he approaches he hears voices, but there’s no one there, just a small clearing with a ring of light-colored mushrooms in the middle. The circle inside the mushrooms is glowing and now the voices are louder, but the clearing is empty.

Summary
Bucky lifts his head to look Steve in the eye. “You have to punish me. Punish me hard. I need it.” And then he immediately and silently drops to the floor, head bowed and arms behind his back, awaiting his discipline.
A weight of certainty settles over Steve as he hears these words. This is how it should be, with Bucky bowed low in front of him, begging for punishment, begging to worship Steve’s body. This is how it always is between the two of them. This is right. He sees the rope coiled neatly on the shelf, thinks about all the ways he can wreak pain on the figure laid out at his feet. He opens his mouth to order Bucky to take off Steve’s pajama bottoms, as usual.
But even as Steve thinks the word right in his mind, something rearranges itself inside his chest. Something very powerful and very strong that’s been lodged there for a very long time, waiting for this moment. He pauses, irresolute. The order won’t come.

“So, you’re going to die, Cap, but first, we’re going to have a little fun,” continues Pierce, gesturing the guards to herd Steve into a windowed cell inside the larger room, and then dismissing them. The cell door clangs shut and Steve is trapped in the room. Unfortunately it’s not soundproof, because he can still hear Pierce’s smarmy voice through the comms.
“Are you ready for the fun part, Steve?” he says, and signals to the toadie, who presses some buttons on a nearby console. An invisible door opens on the back wall, and in walks a huge, familiar figure dressed in black tac gear and a mask, his silver arm gleaming in the fluorescent light. He stops about six feet from Steve and turns to the window, awaiting orders.

Steve’s husband’s beautiful head appears around the doorway first, presumably checking to see if he’s awake. When he sees Steve lying in the bed, eyes open, his expression goes from shock to anger in the space of three seconds.
“Jesus Christ,” Bucky hisses as he steps into the room in Medical. Tony’s right behind him, his eyes bright with concern but also with a certain level of mirth.
“I know,” he says with sympathy that may or may not be sincere. “But I toldja, Buckaroo, I warned you ahead of time.”
Bucky says nothing, but with lips pursed and eyes blazing, comes up to Steve and cuffs him on the side of the head. It’s just hard enough to sting, and Steve snorts a little in pain before looking at his husband and saying, “OK, I deserved that.”
Only it doesn’t come out in words.

He’s even cuter up close, Bucky thinks, staring avidly at those huge blue eyes with ridiculously long eyelashes, the high cheekbones dusted with glittery highlighter, the full lips accentuated even further with pearly pink lipstick. Even the slight crook in his nose adds to the allure.
“I had that all taken care of,” the angel says ungratefully, crossing his thin arms over his chest.
“I’m sure you did,” replies Bucky, his voice smooth. He leans in a little and tilts his mouth up a little more. “I’m James, but you can call me Bucky. And you are…?” he lets the sentence hang in the air. Angel looks over him for a moment and must at least not hate what he sees, because while his grumpy expression never wavers, his eyes light up.
“Steve. I’m Steve,” he says shortly.
“It’s lovely to meet you, Steve. Would you like a drink?” Bucky says, lifting his hand to Dugan behind the bar.
“No thanks,” Steve spits out, crossing his arms tighter over his skinny frame.
Bucky might be a little in love already.

“What happened,” Steve says after a few minutes.
“Scratched it on the fence while I was doing some recon,” replies Bucky shortly, kicking his boots into the soft earth under the leaves. “It’ll be fine. But I need your help with this one.”
“Who or what is in there,” asks Steve, resisting the urge to run his hand down Bucky’s uninjured thigh.
“It’s Rumlow and one of my old handlers,” says Bucky softly, and Steve says “motherfucker” under his breath. “They arrived last night by helicopter. It’s still there, on a pad behind the warehouse, northwest corner. And we need to take this depot out too. There are no trucks at the bays but there are thirty or forty semis inside, full of weapons and other materials to restart Hydra cells in the Northeast.”
Steve says “motherfucker” again, this time a little louder.
“This is pretty big, bigger than the Berkshires,” he says after a moment of silence. “Should we get the Avengers involved? They’ve got the extra firepower, and Tony…”
“No,” says Bucky sharply, cutting Steve off. He can’t see it, but Steve knows his love is frowning under his mask. “I need to take care of this now.“

So Steve is going to do this extra-credit project, like a total nerd. Now it’s up to Bucky to get Fury to pick him to join Steve. This next bit requires some finesse on Bucky’s part, but he figures it out in less than half a second.
Fidgeting in his chair (and enjoying the slivers of pain emanating from his ass), Bucky huffs a little, acting faux-annoyed, like this is the dumbest project ever. This time he really does roll his eyes.
It works to perfection. Fury swivels toward him immediately.
“Mr. Barnes,” he says drily. “Since you’re so antsy, you can work on this project with Rogers. You two will at the library front desk tomorrow at three. Mr. Schmidt will meet you there and take you up to the archives.”

“Yeah, sweetheart,” says Bucky, piling on because they know they can. “You need to kick this villain’s ass as fast as possible so you can talk to Scott and get things settled and spend a delicious weekend in San Francisco with your new boyfriend.”
“Oh my god, you two.” Steve feels the blush rising up his entire torso under his tac suit and across his face. “Keep it down, will you? Everyone will hear, Christ almighty.”
“Oh, like the entire rest of the team doesn’t know about your crush.” Nat’s sarcasm could blister the paint off the sides of the plane. Bucky’s laugh echoes out of the phone. “Barton and I have a bet and I’ve got fifty dollars riding on this weekend, so get on that already, Steve,” she continues.
Now Steve kind of wants to run and jump out the back of the quinjet and live in the Sierra Nevada woods as a hermit, never to be seen again.
