Summary
As he walks back out into the main barroom, Bucky immediately senses that the atmosphere has changed. A chill has settled over the previously relaxed and jovial crowd, and the entire space has gotten quieter. Bucky shifts into high alert when he sees why.
A Hydra soldier in full uniform is sauntering through the bar, gazing around arrogantly at the patrons. He wears captain’s bars and is dark-haired and muscular and roughly handsome, reminding Bucky unpleasantly of Rumlow, though he’s a bit younger.
Bucky wonders at his boldness in wandering into this bar, of all places, given that the Kopenhagen system has long been hostile to Hydra and native citizens have effectively countered and destroyed any of Pierce’s previous attempts to build bases here.
Then the soldier sees his partner, and his eyes light up as he strides over to their table. And all of Bucky’s musings about why this idiot is here go out the window, because now said idiot has got a predatory smile on his face and he’s daring to approach Steve.

Summary
Steve Rogers supposes he’s happy. He’s almost three years out of the ice, living in Avengers Tower, leading ops for Tony Stark and SHIELD and partnering with Nat and Clint (in more ways than one) in a thriving private security side business. But then he meets arrogant tech billionaire James Barnes, and it’s hate at first sight. Barnes is a terrible dickhead; it’s a shame he’s so hot and so good in bed. Steve can’t get him out of his head, and his life is further complicated by a hypercompetent vigilante assassin who almost ruins one of his private security jobs. Who is “the Winter Soldier” and how is he so good? And why does Steve secretly sympathize with his anti-fascist, pro-environment agenda? When Fury calls Steve to DC to protect Project Insight from the Soldier, Steve’s life gets even more complicated. But everything is resolved to everyone’s satisfaction (except the Nazis), with a little spycraft and a lot of explosions along the way.

Summary
The angel’s face has the eerie, otherworldly beauty typical of holy statuary, but its expression is severe, ascetic, the eyes staring out coldly under luxurious lashes and over-pronounced cheekbones to the slight frown of the full lips. It’s like the statue is weighing Bucky’s life choices and finding him wanting. Bucky has never seen any other statue like it, and struggles to place it within a specific art period. It could be from the 16th century, and it could have been carved last year.
It’s the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen.

“OK, Barnes,” says Steve, finishing his tea and standing up. “Gotta use the john — ahem, sorry, must run off to the loo,” he says in a travesty of a British accent.
“Roger that, Rogers, toodle pip,” Bucky says in a slightly better imitation of an English person. “I’ll meet you outside.” Steve brushes his hand over Bucky’s and scoots away to the bathroom. Bucky looks after him for a few moments, smiling happily, and then gets up to bus the table. He’s lost in thought and not looking where he’s going as he leaves the dishes by the kitchen entrance, and almost runs into a shorter, older man nearby.
“Oh I’m so sorry…” Bucky starts to say, and then stops as the man turns to look at him. And then his brain is stuttering and his skin is crawling, because he knows this man.
It’s the Reverend Dr. Arnim Fucking Zola, from Shield Academy.

But Steve refuses to die a slow, painful death at the hand of a demigod, any more than he’s willing to be killed by the love of his life while said love is under a spell. Steeling his nerves, Steve wonders if he can grab his guard’s blaster and give Bucky a clean death before turning it on himself.
He’s about to expend all his remaining energy in the attempt when Pierce stands up straight and lifts his arms, slowly and with difficulty, into the air.
“Loki Laufeyson of Jotunheim,” the oligarch calls out, his voice thunderous, “God of war and mischief, I summon thee from Asgard to deal justice and death on these two traitors to my rule. Come forth, oh Loki, from your faithful acolyte in the mid-realm.”
The huge Transvaalian diamond hanging from Pierce’s neck gleams brightly as he makes his request and incantation. For a few seconds the words echo through the cavernous throne room, and for a few seconds after that, nothing happens.
It’s a bit of an anti-climax, frankly.

Summary
Steve glosses over the pain and suffering of the last 24 hours with two words. He’s not ready to talk, even with Nat, about what Bucky’s been enduring for the last week — what he’s having to endure for a fucking second time — to detox from the drugs and the new form of cryo and the Regency-era illusion they created to keep Bucky sedated and compliant. If he thinks about it too much he’ll just start systematically destroying Tony’s perfectly decorated mid-century modern apartment, heave the beautiful and priceless Noguchi coffee table right out the window.
A shadow passes over Nat’s face — she of all people knows something about what Bucky’s going through, she’s a survivor of the Red Room, after all — and then she must remember why she stopped by, because her expression shifts. A gleam comes into her eyes, which turn exceedingly green, and the corner of her perfectly red lips curls up.
“I just wanted to tell you that we’ve got some verified intel from our newest…source,” she says. One eyebrow lifts a fraction.

Summary
The ship comes skittering down through the atmosphere half a mile from the compound. It doesn’t crash into the forest, but it’s a near thing. The pilot somehow manages to land in the meadow, the thrusters kicking in at the last minute to avoid major damage on impact.
“Hydra,” Steve says quietly to no one, looking through his binocs. “Fighter. Single occupancy.” He nods to himself, and puts down the binoculars. A few last-minute preparations, and then he’s off to be a one-man welcoming committee. As he ambles toward the ship, a light breeze stirs the trees off to his left.
The pilot is already climbing out of the fighter cockpit when Steve approaches.
“Morning, commander,” Steve says, noting the insignia on the man’s uniform. “Help you with anything?”
The man takes off his helmet. He’s tall and dark-haired, a scar across his cheek. Staring arrogantly at Steve, scrawny and six inches shorter and apparently unarmed, the pilot quickly concludes he’s not a threat.

Summary
An alarm sounds shrill overhead as Bucky takes out three Hydra troops with his blaster and another one with the stun baton. There are only a dozen regular soldiers and a handful of elite Hydra shock troops left alive in Base 54 — his attack plan has been more successful than even he anticipated.
Bucky’s service robot is already transporting the loot from the vault back to the Valkyrie on the far side of the base. He retreats down the hall and into the galley to brace for his final attack on Pierce and his remaining cohort.
“What the fuck?”
The voice is surprisingly deep and resonant for a droid, and it echoes through the kitchen and off the metal shelves and countertops. Bucky turns sharply, expecting to see the usual service robot that generally staffs the galley in Hydra star bases.
But it’s not a droid, it’s a human. A tiny, beautiful human with a shock of light blond hair, holding a huge knife in a credible fighting posture.

“J-Alpha-133 Winter,” the AI replies, because she’s a sassy little shit, even after all his modifications. Especially after all his modifications.
“Bucky,” he repeats. He’ll do this as long as he needs to, and she knows this, so after another brief pause, she answers, “Bucky.”
“Thank you,” Bucky says. It’s been almost a year since he, Pierce’s fastest and most powerful enhanced humanoid soldier, broke his programming and escaped Hydra Base 17 with Pierce’s fastest and most powerful fighter ship. Since then he’s made his own modifications to the Valkyrie — and himself — to make it, and him, even faster and more powerful.
And he took back his childhood nickname — at least he thinks it was his nickname. A month after his getaway from Pierce and Hydra, a memory of his Ma calling him “Bucky” as she scolded him for ripping his pants had surfaced in Bucky’s mind. Whether it’s real or not, it’s better than being called J-Alpha-133, like some mindless android.

He holds himself oddly, his left arm behind him and out of sight as if he’s hiding something, but otherwise it’s entirely the same man he’s missed all these months.
Chest full, breathing fast and shallow, he stands as if rooted to the earth. He wants to run forward and pitch himself at Bucky’s feet, kneel and beg for forgiveness, tell him how sorry he is that he couldn’t reach him as he dangled from that train. How sorry he is that he was persuaded not to look for him in those alpine ravines until he found him. How sorry he is that he never told him quite enough how much he loved him, how much he needed him.
How Bucky was a part of him that was lost and he knew right away that he’d never be complete again.

Steve ambles toward the main entrance onto the Piazza Navona and is about to exit the building when his attention is caught by a long, narrow chapel off the narthex, with a plain wooden crucifix on the altar surrounded by banks of lit candles. He walks slowly toward the altar but there’s an odd recess on the outside wall and he turns his head to see what’s in it.
It’s a statue of an angel in black marble, not quite life-size, with huge wings fanned out around the human figure. The angel appears caught in mid-flight, with only one foot anchored to the base; it’s wearing nothing but a short tunic draped casually over its perfect form. It gazes out into the middle distance, one arm by its side, the other gesturing forward. Its hair is long and tousled, furthering the illusion of forward movement.
The angel’s face has the eerie, otherworldly beauty typical of holy statuary, but its expression is sensual, almost debauched, from the curve of the eyebrows to the slight uprise of the perfect lips. Steve has never seen any other statue like it.
It’s the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen.

“I don’t like it,” are Steve’s only words when Fury has finished briefing them on their mission. Fury looks like he’s about half a second away from rolling his eyes, but Bucky snuggles closer to him and Darcy reaches out and rubs his shoulder sympathetically.
“There’ll be full security watching you the entire time,” Nat reminds him, “and I’ll be there so if things get out of hand…” she pauses as she sees Steve’s expression get even darker. “All three of you will be perfectly safe, Steve,” she finishes gently.
“I still don’t like it,” Steve grumbles, wrapping a protective arm around Bucky and pulling Darcy close with the other one. “You could totally get those plans from Rollins or Rumlow a different way. After everything that went down at Shield, Bucky should never have to see either of them again. And Darcy doesn’t need to meet these assholes, either.”
“Oh Steve, babe, you’re the sweetest,” Darcy laughs. “It’s not like I haven’t dealt with my share of assholes. I can totally handle those two chucklefucks.”

“Bucky. I’m so glad you decided to join me.”
Steve stands up at his primo table in the middle of the Water Library’s main dining room to greet Bucky.
“Steve,” Bucky says, his voice a little breathless. As Bucky approaches, Steve scans his face and his pupils dilate. Bucky mentally pats himself on the back for the eyeliner. Steve takes himself in hand.
“You look gorgeous, honey,” he says firmly, his voice threaded through with gravel, and he leans in to give Bucky a quick kiss on the lips. Bucky’s head goes a little fizzy like he’s just had a glass of champagne, but he keeps it together enough to look Steve up and down.
He looks even better than he did on the flight, in a lightweight silk-wool suit in royal blue and a crisp bright white button up with the top three buttons open. Bucky very purposely doesn’t peek to see if any chest hair is showing because he’s having enough trouble holding it together as it is.

Steve shows up just after three and Bucky is suddenly and ridiculously glad he didn’t cut and run, because this guy is gorgeous. Dirty blond hair flopping over his forehead and an undercut in the back, ocean blue eyes with maybe the longest eyelashes Bucky’s ever seen, high cheekbones with a long nose that’s been broken at least once, and soft, full, pink lips.
Bucky might jerk off thinking about those lips later.
The face of an angel sits atop a thin, wiry body. Steve is maybe 5’8, a good six inches shorter than Bucky, but he carries himself bigger and with an air of pugnacity that warns people against underestimating him. His shoulders are surprisingly broad and seem to telegraph the challenge Steve presents to the world.
Yeah, come and try it, asshole, his stance says.
Right now Steve is standing in the living room of Bucky’s rental house, arms crossed, looking around in disbelief. His beautiful mouth is turned down and he periodically shakes his head.

If you’d told the Bucky Barnes of a year ago that he’d not only be best friends with Steve Rogers, but head over heels in love with him, Bucky would have laughed in your face. Hence the turbulent emotions. Bucky loves Steve, loves him like a brother, but the dream has unsettled him and made him wonder. He is thus a little hesitant, a little quieter than usual as Steve greets him in the hall and they sit down to a lovely lunch in the hothouse. Steve dismisses the servants so they’re alone in light-filled space. They eat well, but at the end of the meal Steve notices Bucky’s reticence.
“Bucky, is everything alright? Are you in good health? Your family?” Steve inquires, edging his chair closer to Bucky’s and laying his hand on Bucky’s forearm in a gesture of concern.
“Yes, Steve, we are all in good health, thank you,” Bucky starts. He’s about to make some superficial excuse but then he looks up at Steve’s face, into his fathomless blue eyes which are full of worry and solicitude, and decides to tell him the truth.
