If she’s declared unfit for work, they'll take her ship and tear it apart for scrap. She’ll have to work on some planetside office and never get to see all those awful, awful stars again. The far-off lights shimmer and blink in and out of her peripheral vision. Faster-than-light.
She turned and pushed gently off of the hull and let herself float in the quiet dark. Almost against her will her eyes fell on the biggest source of light in her world. From all the way on the edge of the system she couldn’t see the twin stars dancing around each other. The binary glows dripped and flowed until they melted into a single wave. The wave danced through miles upon miles of empty space until it crested and crashed into her, sending her tumbling through the sea. -
