A slight change to Baphen's prophecy at Cardan's birth completely derails the plot of The Cruel Prince. When Dain hears this version of the prophecy, Cardan is transformed into a beast years ahead of schedule. On a related note, Jude Duarte (eventually) learns that in Elfhame not even the strays are what they appear.... aka that one where Cardan is Jude's pet for several years before turning back into a very feral prince.
