In the alley, hurried steps and shouting voices rush past; they catch fragments of: “Where the fuck did they go then?” or “Keep looking!” and even “The short one looks like a bloody birthday cake, how do you lose that—”

Now Ed feels itchy. Not from the mosquito bites, itchy under his skin. This whole day, combined with Lucius' bold and scathing warning, have only intensified the weird feelings he's been having recently. He's decided it's time to act.
Ed doesn't have a plan as such, but he definitely has an intention. Well, truth be told, he has the start of a plan and he intends to execute it tonight and then just go with whatever happens.
He wants to touch Stede. Maybe kiss him a little too.

It had been a long and emotional night. The fancy party had ended in mayhem and fire. And acts of gentle heroism.
Ed was feeling a bit foolish, all dressed up with nowhere to go.
Then Stede had presented him with his red, silk handkerchief, neatly folded, and placed it in his pocket, in the moonlight.
Driven by an impulse neither can identify, they decide the evening's entertainments don't have to end, and embark on a friendly card game, spiced up with a few harmless wagers.
Stede couldn’t shake the thought that there had been something between them. Something fragile but enticing. A sparkling, magnetic sort of pull that had come into being when Stede had placed the handkerchief in Ed’s pocket and had lasted beyond their slightly awkward goodnight’s, drawing them to turn towards each other, even as they tried to part.
Ed had debated, back and forth, with himself about whether or not to give in to the weird instinct he felt. The one luring him to go to Stede, like the thrall of a siren’s song. He had leaned on the rail, watching the moon encrust the crests of the waves with diamonds, and had tried to work out why he had come so close to kissing Stede.

“What are you doing?” he started to ask, trailing off quickly as his mouth went dry at the sight of the man’s bare chest where he had pulled his undershirt all the way up. Stede was too distracted to finish speaking by the overall impression: a canvas of ink covered skin, muscular and soft in all the right places, a tantalizing trail of dark hair leading Stede’s eyes down, down…
Fuck. Focus, Bonnet.
He dragged his focus back to the inked images which were surely the point of this man’s public indecency.

Ed was almost crying anyway - it’s how he gets when Stede decides to dedicate an entire evening to kissing him - but now his breath hitches and he blinks against tears. “You think so?” he asks. Under normal circumstances he’d be embarrassed by how much he needs this. It’s lucky for him that being a pirate sort of takes normal circumstances off the table.
“Yes,” Stede says against his skin. “You’re so, so beautiful.”
