Summary
He sat down with his guitar, propped a leg up, took a deep breath, and let it have it. The music came easy; he let it take him away. His lights came on; his fingers hurt. A notification popped into his vision, suggesting he eat and hydrate. The song grew, a real soulripper. The inevitable loneliness of it all. The terror. The crescendo falling off into the quiet melody, the breath after the scream. The resurrective procession of hope and rage. Of love and fear.

[NOTE: Light Spoiler Warning: this story doesn't bring up huge spoilers, but takes place after the end of Persona 5 Royal and includes the conclusion arcs of several confidants' stories. It's written as Yusuke living through a few years after the game.]
Yusuke had been happy with the path he was on, enamored with the life of a “starving artist.” He’d had no family to disapprove of his choices—in fact his found family fully endorsed his artistry—and there was nowhere he’d rather be than where he already was: surrounded by people who loved him. Ryuji heard Akira laugh again. He looked up; Akechi had his back to them, head tilted, shoulders jostling up and down with laughter. Akira patted Akechi on the shoulder; this made Akechi laugh more. Something in Ryuji pulled; he felt all tangled up, kinda like he wanted to cry and hit something at the same time.

Kaidan wishes that were true. He sits down in solidarity, the back of his aching head pressed against the panel that separates the cockpit, and listens to Joker breathe through his pain, bitterly reminding himself that the galaxy doesn’t owe them a single goddamn thing. Not really. That dotted line had always been a thinly veiled sacrifice.
