“This has to be some kind of conflict of interest,” Regulus says, his lip curling at James.
James shrugs, the idiot, “I don’t know.” His voice is weary, tired. He even looks tired, even though he’s been sleeping all day. In fact, he looks more than just a bit tired. There are deep, dark circles under his eyes, his hair is sticking up– and not in the endearing way it usually is– but simply out of control.
He’s thinner than he used to be, and his brown skin is sallow. Regulus’ eyes catch on the two massive bandages wrapping around his arms.
Jesus fuck.
Regulus had no idea James was… no. He couldn’t do this right now. He was here (and had been for some time now) to figure his own shit out. Not to worry about James’ suicidal ideations. Not to mention, he hated James. So this whole thing? It wasn’t going to work.

James pressed his lips together hard as he fought the urge to suck in a breath at the words. He instinctively reached for his binder of prepared materials and began to flip through it as if it would have the answer, rustling the pages frantically as he did.
“Hello?”
James flinched. “Um, hi, yes sorry it’s uh-- it’s my first day.”
A pause. Then, dry as a bone: “Brilliant. You’d think they’d at least train you to tell people not to kill themselves before handing you a phone.”
James froze, then panicked. “Oh God-- you’re right, I mean, of course-- I didn’t-- oh, shit, I just--”
James’s rambling was interrupted by a quiet sound, over so quickly he almost missed it.
The caller had laughed.
At him.
OR
A muggle college AU where James is a Psychology student who starts working at a crisis center. His first caller is dry, guarded, and somehow familiar, despite being a perfect stranger. Together they wrestle the terrorists into a bundle, and Spider-Man’s webs work on the canvas of the tent just fine. He wads the canvas bundle together until the men inside can’t move and then shoves the bundle on its side and webs the cocoon of angry, insecure White men to the ground.
Deadpool shakes himself as his body pushes bullets back out. “Eugh. I hate that. So itchy and weird. I will never get used to that.”
Tired, shaken, and wishing his mask is less stuffy, Spider-Man walks over to Deadpool and gives him a one-armed hug. That’s when Spider-Man looks around Deadpool’s shoulder and sees a teenage girl lying face down on the ground unmoving, with a knot of other people forming around her. In the lights of the night market, the blood all over her is too obvious.
Deadpool turns and looks, responding to the way Spider-Man tenses, the way his breath catches. “Oh, no.” The lack of swearing is a bad sign. Deadpool stumbles toward her. “No, no, wait. This isn’t supposed to happen. We saved the day. We did good. Why would this happen?”

“Well, I didn’t, so shut the fuck up”, Chuuya manages to bite back before shallowly grinding back down to meet his fingers, his hands scrabbling to find purchase as he scratches at Dazai’s bicep and back through his thin button-up.
