Chuuya scowled into his wine, immediately regretting calling the bastard. He was honestly a little surprised that Dazai answered the call at all, especially on only the second ring. Chuuya was used to Dazai not picking them up, and having to leave him very animated voicemails instead.
“Ugh, forget it you asshole,” he said, going to hang up the phone.
“Wait wait wait, Chibi, come on! You can’t end the phone call that quickly,” Dazai protested.
“Oh ya?” Chuuya asked, not really sure why he was entertaining him.
“Well of course! Then it would be as short as you~” Dazai sing-songed, his tone immediately grating on Chuuya’s nerves. How one man could make him want to commit first-degree murder so quickly, he might never understand.Who knew that drinking could dredge up so many old feelings?

"The Agency was quiet, no big missions aside from Kenji and Kyouka's—but their mission was more of an errand from an old lady who's cat got lost somewhere in the city." Dazai starts the events of his day, and Chuuya listens.
"They arrived at the office... With… people in tow."
"Who, Osamu?"
Chuuya's already having a hunch, but the next word Dazai said only confirmed it.
The room went quiet for a moment and Chuuya clearly heard the hard swallow that Dazai did, as if there's disgust making its way into his tongue that he can't let out or he will puke.
But for Chuuya... He deserves to know at least, even though it's nothing important.

“I don’t need a fucking nanny,” he snaps. Watching Dazai bristle is like watching a rock start talking. They’re standing with a cliff between them even though Chuuya could reach out and grasp his tie and choke him to death. Chuuya’s brain is still a scramble of images flashing at the back of his head; the shower of bullets he had to keep away from Dazai, the smug smirk he got in return. Them. Always them when they’re deployed together, and Chuuya’s reminded what it means to miss someone when he’s toeing his shoes alone on the foyer, mission completed.
They’re two worlds colliding, and Chuuya isn’t a selfish man. He only wishes he could steal something—it’s not like he wants to keep Dazai or anything—but just… a keepsake. And that would be disgusting; wanting. “I’m okay. I’ve done this countless times without your stupid help."

Summary
The stranger rolled in his slumber, mouth semi-open and a weird smile on his face that Chuuya had never seen on him before. It made him look somewhat younger, and softer, with the way the sand was dusting his face and his wet hair was clinging to his skin. He reached his hand out, moving a strand away. The guy' smile widened and he leaned into the touch like a pet fish would. It was endearing, he thought, bowing down until their noses almost touched. Without thinking, he inhaled deeply: the human smelled of salt, like the ocean, like Chuuya's home.
When he opened his eyes again, the man was blinking up at him, still clearly lost.
Startled, Chuuya jumped and dived back into the water, swimming swiftly back home, hoping the guy would think he had been hallucinating all along.
Chuuya couldn't avoid the feeling that he was somehow still going to get fucked big time by his good deed.
(Or, when merman!Chuuya saves Dazai's ass from drowning, he can't know how much both their lives will change.)

There at the entrance of the shop stood a man with matted black hair and dilated pupils. The man’s deep purple eyes seemed to swirl invitingly towards Dazai, closer and closer. The brunette could almost feel himself already slipping back into bad habits. That was, until the phone he now had an alarmingly tight grasp on buzzed once more. That’s right. Chuuya. His mind supplied. Chuuya was coming for him. He had Chuuya now, someone who legitimately cared for him.
Dazai’s throat seemed to close up on him unwillingly, but he still weakly croaked out, “We’re closed.” He glanced over at a bland clock mounted up on the wall. 8:04. The shop closed four minutes ago.
The man smiled, slowly stepping further into the coffee shop. “What, can’t make time for your favorite customer?”

Ding!
The cafe is a cozy little thing, oddly named The Tainted Cafe. It’s decorated with caramel-colored woods and walls filled to the brim with various posters and photos. There are even a few plants strewn about near the front windows.
However, what catches his eye is not the warm interior, but the cafe’s fiery-headed worker. The man looks like he's about to drop dead, with eye bags deep enough to reach his soul. Still, there's a certain beauty to him. There’s his striking red hair, which stands out against his pale skin, lightly dotted with freckles- and oh, his eyes, one blue and one brown, are so mesmerizing to look at. If he looks long enough, he thinks he might get lost in the storm of emotion and color churning just below the surface.
“Welcome to The Tainted Cafe, what can I get for ya?” The man, Chuuya, reads his nametag, greets.
