“God, Will, don’t apologize,” Mike said firmly, no room for argument. “I’m sorry, okay? I’m so sorry, I just rushed into it. Fuck, that fucking bastard’s lucky he’s already dead.” His voice was steady, but there was something fierce under it now. Protective.
Will let out a breath, tension leaving him when he knew Mike wasn’t upset with him. “I didn’t want you to think it was because I didn’t want to-” He gestured vaguely between them. “This.”
“I don’t. But, we really don’t have to if it’s making you upset,” Mike rushed to assure. “We can just talk, or read that new Spiderman comic, or… cuddle, or something.”
“No,” Will said too quickly. “I mean- we can. But I think I want to try again. Maybe I can try to make my brain, like, associate it with a good memory. With you. I mean, only if you want to.”

Crash!
The stand wobbled precariously for a moment before tipping over completely. Terracotta pots shattered on the polished wooden floor, spilling dark soil and lavender sprigs everywhere. The sound was deafening in the quiet shop.
"Shit!" Mike yelped, his ears flattening against his head with pure mortification. He dropped to his knees immediately, trying to gather the broken pieces, his tail still going a mile a minute, now knocking over a nearby watering can. "I'm so sorry! I'll clean that up."
"That's... quite alright." The voice was soft, a little hesitant, but it sent a shiver down his spine.
Mike looked up.
And the world stopped.

There’s a lot of things Mike didn't expect in life, the first being that it was Max who drew his name in the Halloween secret costume exchange but he should’ve figured that one, it was just his luck after all. The second was the costume she picked out for him: a dog costume, complete with a collar and leash which he refused to even look at. He wasn’t going to be treated like an actual dog, thank you very much.
And the final, most pressing thing: how much he actually liked it when Will treated him like his own personal dog—tugging him around, giving him orders, and worst of all, calling him a good boy.

“Mike.” The knife pauses, and Will glances over. It’s buried deep in the man’s jugular now, blood dripping down a sharp wrist, fingers embedded. “You can stop now.”
Mike’s shoulders tense. “He shouldn’t have been so touchy,” he hisses back without turning around. There’s real anger in his voice, his eyebrows pinched together in that familiar little crease Will knows too well.
“You ruined the chase,” Will replies mildly. Mike’s head dips slightly at that. “And you mushed up his brain,” Will continues. “Dustin’s going to be upset about that.”
Mike exhales sharply, his shoulders slumping. The knife stays where it is, still lodged in the man’s neck as he slowly turns around to face Will. His lips pull into a sulky little pout, blood darkening the corners of his mouth. Will’s heart stutters in his chest, licking his own lips unconsciously, and Mike's eyes track the movement like a dog following a treat. “Are you mad at me?” Mike whispers, his voice small.

The silence isn't anything new. Will’s been quiet all day, but he's been quiet for months before that.
I-... I'm glad you asked, Mike. I'm glad you're my best friend. I know it's silly, but- sometimes I think God let me have you as a best friend to make up for everything else. Or that maybe I just got so lucky meeting you that everything else needed to be evened out somehow.
Mike squeezes his eyes shut, jaw tightening. He couldn't shut down right now.

Will makes a small, startled sound, and then he’s laughing, hiccupping a bit from the force of it. “Your what?” Will manages, breathless, grinning despite himself.
Behind him, Mike’s smiling, he can feel it, the way it presses warm and bright into his shoulder. “My wife,” Mike repeats, even though he's tensing a little like he's nervous Will is going to turn him down.
or, It's Will's birthday and Mike's planned the whole day for him, like a good boyfriend should. Will's a lot more focused on the fact that Mike keeps referring to him as his wife, though.
