I forgot many things when in the Other Place. That was how it was there. Memories were more real on Earth. I forgot that Nathaniel was quite so young, that his injuries had been so bad, that he was not healthy when he was this pale—and I forgot that his eyes were so radiantly blue, so brightly and strikingly blue that they seemed the color of a spirit’s essence and not something that could belong to a human. He opened his blue, blue eyes and I fell under their spell as strongly as any binding chain of a command that had ever been issued to me.
