Summary
The Man of Progress is a symbol and a carefully crafted illusion. Behind it, Jayce has been sinking. Until Viktor makes an offhand comment at a gala and the illusion completely shatters.
“Jayce,” Viktor says. “You’re bleeding.”
That makes sense, Jayce thinks, since he’d apparently just crushed a glass in his hand.
“You’re also not breathing,” Viktor notes. His voice is concerned now, and Jayce feels Viktor’s hand fall on his elbow.
Jayce nods, because that makes sense too. Or, no. It doesn’t make sense. He should be breathing. But Viktor is correct that Jayce is not.

really impressed by how love is depicted in this fic, it feels so real and soft ... and the prose is 10/10 top tier. the mix between passages with short sentences and then introspective passages with long sentences is so lovely and woaw... very inspiring!!

As Viktor rolls his suitcase up the aisle of the plane, he’s almost afraid to see whether the window seat is empty. In an ideal universe, Viktor would have the whole row to himself, but he’ll settle for one empty seat. Just one.
Alas, reality often disappoints. As he glances into his row, a burly man huddles in the window seat. The man sniffles wetly. Viktor realizes with a start that he’s crying.
His own seat—next to the crying man—gapes up at him.
or: Viktor finds his window seat taken by a crying Jayce. He helps him work through it, and maybe falls in love in the process.

Jayce’s soft, low voice is something precious that he wishes to keep forever, something he can’t disturb.
So, he keeps his eyes closed. Thick and calloused fingers graze over his temple to brush a stray lock of hair out of his face. And it’s so tender, so intimate it almost makes him want to cry.Jayce has never touched him like this.
Or; Viktor finds out Jayce whispers whatever crosses his mind when his partner is asleep. He acts clueless, until he doesn’t.

Jayce wordlessly slipped under the blankets, hardly feeling the slight pressure of them over his body. All he could see was the snow out there. He could feel it burrowing under his skin, the phantom sensation of what he swore was his blood freezing in his veins.
He flinched at the feeling of a hand on his face. Viktor’s palm was cold on his cheek, but it was oddly grounding.
“Where did you go?”
Jayce swallowed. “You know where.”

“You know,” Jayce hovered across from where Viktor stood at the other end of the counter, “I think it’s more sugar than coffee at that point.”
His tone was light and teasing, and Viktor couldn’t help the little smile that quirked the side of his own lips. Jayce’s face was free of that too-practiced grin and the sad doe eyes, instead giving a genuine, crooked smile that showed off the sharpness of his canine teeth.
“Just the way I like it,” Viktor said, raising a brow, equally as teasing. “It’s not my fault that you Topsiders have not discovered the wonders of sweetmilk.”
A modern university AU, in which Jayce is a barista and Viktor has a fondness for coffeeshops (and Jayce).
