Summary
That night, Robert tosses and turns in his sleep. Bruce catches bits and pieces of his speech. Ransom, safe, drown, and pinwheel of all things. “Don’t hurt me,” Robert whimpers once, and “What do you want from me?”
Slowly, a cold fury takes over Bruce. Whoever hurt Robert, Bruce is going to rain hellfire upon them.

"Crime-fighting is magnetic, all-consuming in a ‘can’t look away from a train wreck’ way. It’s the arduous kind of work that leaves Jim hundreds of miles from his family. It’s work that’s left Wayne homeless, broken, and bloodied; thankless work that put Gordon’s police force at the mercy of debonair corporate sponsors.
Retirement for Jim and Batman is more nightmare than dream. There’s no such thing as one last time for them. Bruce Wayne doesn’t have the wherewithal for ordinary life and Jim Gordon isn’t a man who can leave a job half-done.
Their success metric: another night alive, together."
