With his back and step straight despite the many miles he had walked, with a letter in his pocket promising that Simon Kain, supposed immortal and, if so, salvation of his life’s work, would grant him an audience.
So why, when a nervous early walker pointed him to the Kains’ abode, did he find its three doors closed? Locked, and why, at least according to another kindly passerby who saw him loitering by the Crucible’s rear-facing porch, would the Kains only deign to admit him, or any guest, after night had fallen?
