Before he'd had every last vestige of hope carved right out of his body, and even for a short while after, Astarion had dared to "pray" for his rescue. Perhaps because he spat in indignant rage at the gods for allowing his suffering, his demands went unanswered.
He should be ecstatic to have someone around now who's so eager to jump in front of a blade for him. There is no reason for such saccharine displays of heroics to creep under his skin and revolt him the way they do, the same way he's gotten used to over two centuries.
