“You can’t make me go,” Mikey blurts, too loud. “I won’t. I don’t want to.”
“Jesus,” Donnie mutters, rubbing his forehead. He’s already so fed-up with Mikey after like three seconds of conversation that Mikey can feel his eyes start to sting. “The last thing I want to do is fight with you, Mike. I thought you liked Cowabunga Carl.”
It’s not fair. Donnie’s so smart. He’s tired and overworked and unhappy, but he’s smart. How can he get this one thing so wrong? How can he not know Mikey as well as he used to, like all of those years of being each other’s best friends and co-conspirators and secret-keepers from where they were relegated to the “B Team” aren’t as intrinsic and important and fundamental to him as they are to Mikey? How can he look at Mikey, right in the face, and not understand him at all?
Something breaks.

“GaH!” Leo shuddered, pulling himself up quickly and brushing off the cold substance.
“Leo???”
Looking back to see what it was that caused his fall, his heart nearly launched into his throat. “Oh no.”
“Leo, what’s wrong?!” Raph’s voice echoed again from the phone.
Leo got onto his knees, ignoring the cold snow that he initially was avoiding. He anxiously brushed away a few inches of loose fluffy snow to see the familiar pattern of a shell. “Shit-“ He muttered under his breath “Get Donnie and come to my location now!”
“What’s going on?! We’re on our way now!” Raph sounded like he was already running.
“I found Mikey.” Leo’s voice cracked as he hung up the phone before Raphael could respond.

See, when they get too cold, their bodies have this amazing defense mechanism that diverts their blood to their core to keep them alive. Super unfortunate for the Hamato family’s blood pressure, because in severely cold environments a box turtle’s heart will actually stop beating. Fascinating right?
It would be soooo fascinating, in Leo’s humble opinion, if they had known about it before finding Mikey dead on the floor of a freezer.or, box turtles can literally have 80 percent of their bodily fluids frozen and LIVE. what the fuck.

Leo wanted to be like those good heroes, he saw on TV and movies, the ones that saved the world and everyone loved. He found shirts for Mikey, scarves and knick knacks for Don, helped Raph de-stress by watching his favorite shows, getting Splinter’s tea ready when he wasn’t looking. He was happy, really he was.
It was just hard sometimes. To pretend the big blue world outside the grates didn’t pull in stitches and seams at his chest when he stared too long, to pretend that the way his brothers groaned at his jokes didn’t make him feel like he was swallowing grey paint. To pretend like their constant near injuries and loud noises and pranks weren’t getting under his skin just a little.
Mostly, he worried. He loved his brothers, and they loved him, but man, a guy needed a break.
