Summary
"I like you!" Reo exclaims, and woah, if that doesn't make Seishiro's poor heart beat faster. So bold. So… direct with his intentions. Normally people at least wait a little while to ask Seishiro whatever it is they want from him.
Speaking of want, it seems Reo already has that covered as well:
"My motto is 'I always get what I want'! We're going to be the best in the world together, treasure! Just you wait!"
As Reo drags Seishiro into the first semblance of a hug he's had in who-knows how long, he can't really find it in himself to deny the declaration.
Hm. Guess I have a boyfriend now?
Or, Nagi heavily misinterprets his first meeting with Reo as a love confession and Reo is unaware of this misconception.

It had started in Ivan’s office, like it always did.
Up the creaking stairs of the old rotting house, snap into a salute, stare at the spot six inches above Ivan’s head while rattling off his report. Easy, like it always was, so long as he didn’t think too hard about the whole situation at hand, and what was coming.
Gilbert felt Ivan’s eyes on him like creeping fingers around his throat. The game was already in play, it was just up to him to play his part in it. He was obnoxiously sober, reality a dull scrape against his brain, but duty called all the same.

“I don’t need anything. Just leave me alone.”
Just for a day. I want peace. I like your smile, but your energy is tiring.
Mikage Reo’s expression morphs into frown, then into confusion, ultimately, into frown again. He raises his downcast eyes.
“I thought it was just the anger talking,” he whispers. The tone gradually gets crankier. “But you truly want me gone. You say you don’t hate me, but it is hard to believe when you talk like this.”
“I don’t hate you,” Nagi repeats. “I don’t feel much about you.”

Or, Nagi Seishiro wishes he had never met Mikage Reo, and his wish comes true.

Alfred's breath hitched. "Better... to die free than live on your leash."
Arthur's mouth twisted into a half smile. "Still talking. Always talking."
He reached out, almost tenderly, and brushed a strand of soaked hair from Alfred's forehead. Alfred jerked away as if burned.
"You never learned when to stop," Arthur whispered. "Too many ideas. Too much noise. Too proud to bow, even when it would have saved you pain."
He stood, taking Alfred's musket and reversing it with practiced ease. The brass butt-plate caught the gray light.
"Maybe," he said, "in the dark and the quiet, you'll finally learn to keep your head down. And that mouth shut."
The butt came down hard against Alfred's temple.

Life is monotonous. It follows a pattern with little variation, each person a cog in a machine doomed to live, work, and then die. Alfred doesn’t want that — he yearns for the exciting life of a main character...because he is, and he knows it!
Ivan Braginsky faces a different issue. With his father’s recent death, salvaging the family business has brought about its own series of complications and put his family into a precarious position. To make matters worse, his little sister is insistent he gets with her attractive and unabashed best friend, who brings all sorts of trouble of his own to his already full plate.
The entire arrangement is a disaster waiting to happen. It'd be nice if it wasn't only one of them taking this seriously.

“A plan.” Alfred nodded too quickly, his voice cracking a little. “There’s a Tires Plus like, two blocks from here. I saw it on Google Maps earlier. If we can get there, and I mean if, we can grab a tire. Steal it if we have to.”
Ivan blinked at him. The world felt tilted.
“You want to what.”
“You’ll distract the lizards, I’ll fix the tire. Simple.”
Ivan stared at him like he was speaking in tongues. His mouth opened, no sound came out. Then, finally: “That’s not a plan. That’s a death wish.”
“They’re kind of the same thing right now,” Alfred said, eyes still darting toward the edge of the lot. “But unless you have a better idea—?”
Or: Lizard creatures have seized control of some of the world’s most powerful billionaires, and their plans for domination are already in motion. It's up to college student Alfred Kirkland, and biologist Ivan Braginsky, to rely on one another to stop their plans and make sure the country doesn't end up in total monster apocalypse

Alfred F. Jones is the best math student in the school, and Ivan Braginsky is the best writer.
Unfortunately, Alfred can't write to save his life, Ivan can't do algebra to save his, and they both hate each other.
But when their grades start slipping, and their learning specialist forces them to tutor each other, the obvious solution is simple: trade skills, survive the semester, and go back to ignoring each other.
It would probably work better if they didn't keep seeing things about each other that they were never supposed to.
Or: two academic rivals discover that hating each other is much easier from a distance.
