Oh, she wasn’t joking, then.

"I don’t think I’m used to people touching me anymore.”
“I know what you mean,” she says. “Obviously, I’m touching people all the time but it’s… different, right? When it’s patients and their families?”
“Yeah.” He scrapes at the label on his beer bottle with the nail of his thumb.
“When I was in undergrad, I read this article about people needing… well, I guess it was women, but I’m not sure that matters… a certain number of non-sexual touches every day. It was mostly about mental health, but I think about it a lot.”
He thinks she’s probably thinking about her mental health a lot more lately than usual, too. “What’s the right number of touches?”
“Thirteen,” she says. Her voice sounding a little defeated. “Thirteen non-sexual touches every day. But not just any touch. It’s going to be purposeful touching. And it should be someone you’re close to. Family. A partner. Friends. Just brushing up against a stranger or shaking hands with a colleague isn’t enough to start the flow of dopamine and oxytocin.”
“Thirteen. That’s not so many.”

Summary
“It’s weird, not having Robby here,” Mel is saying, dragging Samira back into the conversation between the residents. “And Dr Al-Hashimi hasn't shown up either.” That is strange, Samira thinks absently. Dr Bryan is back from semi-retirement to cover as attending, but the absence is noticeable. “I'm sure we can figure out how to be good teachers, but it’s a little harder when you don't have your mentor to help."
“I don’t know,” Samira mutters before she can stop herself, still staring at Dr Abbot’s letter on her screen. “Just do the opposite of whatever Robby would do.”
It’s only in the expanding silence afterward that Samira realizes she has said that it out loud.
In the wreckage left after the 4th of July shift, Samira starts gathering the shattered pieces of her life. The question now is in what order does she want to put them together.

Summary
Jack didn’t go in much for praying anymore. No point, not when nobody upstairs seemed to give a shit either way. Praying was for altar boys and little kids and people who wanted their football team to win the Superbowl; for parents in his ER who refused medical care for their dying children in favor of speaking in tongues and yelling up the ladder to something that didn’t answer. Not for him. He believed in only a few things, and none of those were anything big enough to pray to.
Well, almost none. There’d been one thing. A person, really. Bigger than a person, though. More like a grand, orchestral concept, a hope half-divine, fifty-two percent of the reason he kept showing up to work for four years straight.

Summary
“You’re in love with my daughter,” Abe said. It wasn’t a question.
Lenny flicked the lighter shut and shrugged. “She’s my friend.”
“You’re in love with my daughter,” he repeated.
“I’m not trying to marry her, if that’s what you’re worried about,” Lenny took a drag of his cigarette, arms coming around himself like he was exposed and always, always trying to make a joke out of something.
When Susie collapses during a set, Midge is terrifyingly unshaken. She seems to barely notice, acting as if nothing is wrong despite everyone knowing it is. When she tells her father she plans to do another routine the next night rather than visit Susie in hospital, Abe decides to call a friend.

Summary
Tubbo knows some things for certain: he was found in a box; everyone else thinks his parents abandoned him; he's got magic, which is a problem when the God of the Overworld has banned it and one of His Champions lives in L'Manburg; one of the founders of L'Manburg takes great issue with the magic ban; Tubbo's got friends and allies all around him, including Tommy; things are more complicated than they seem; the End has been sealed.
These are all facts. But questions remain: why, exactly, would magic be banned and the End sealed? Why was Tubbo left in a box? And what, exactly, happened to the last Champion of the End?
