“Y’jus’ went somewhere.” He stated so blankly, his own pen still posed above the paperwork he had been filling out, leaned forward in his chair on the opposite side of the desk as you. “Sorry, was just thinking about something.” He tilted his head to the side a little, eyes flitting back and forth between your own in a silent pause. “No, you were somewhere else. I’ve been tryin’ ‘ta get ‘yer attention for the last two minutes.” Oh. Seems like you’ve been caught. No surprises there. “Y’were there, weren’t you?” He spoke his words so softly, slowly and careful like he’d only been so rarely. How did he always know? Was he a fucking mindreader, or something?
You swallowed thickly, continuing to look at him but you could feel your gaze going right through him. Your eyes were unseeing, almost stuck in that facility that smelled of copper and infection.

You took an uneasy step toward them.
“This is Lieutenant Simon Riley. We were sent here by Lieutenant General Shepherd.”
You weren’t ready for this. You felt reluctant to let these two men come any closer to your house. You clenched the butt of the shotgun in your hand tightly, with an exasperated and quiet, “Fuck.”
