Summary
Sixteen-year-old Stephen has been trained to be a warrior for as long as he can remember, raised by the valkyries whom he was told found him as an orphaned child. However, when he meets a stranger from outside of his sheltered camp, it isn’t long before she has him questioning everything that he’s ever known.

“What are you doing,” Wilbur says, inflectionless, peering down at where Tommy has wrapped his arms around Wilbur’s midsection. Like a hug, but somehow even clingier. (If anyone were to find a way, it’d be Tommy.) “You, uh - you good, Tommy?”
“Can a man not hug his sibling in times of distress,” Tommy says grandly. Wilbur has the feeling he’s not meant to ask what’s wrong, as much as he wants to. It’s been a few months now since Tommy manifested, and Wilbur has a vague memory of his own equivalent experience, some kind of sleepy coldness, emptiness, that gradually transitioned into a sensation like he was suffused with warmth and family; he’s still not entirely sure what that had been about. But if Tommy wants to talk about it, he’ll talk about it, and if he doesn’t, he won’t; there’s no use pushing him.Or: Tommy, much to his chagrin, literally needs hugs to appease the birdbrain. His family aren't particularly bothered.

Bradley doesn’t move. He does stare down at Pete - literally; Pete’s suddenly feeling the height difference, having to look up at the kid. It’s a little annoying, especially when Bradley’s got kind of a hard look in his eyes, a stubborn expression that Pete knows too well.
“I told you I’m fine,” Bradley says, soft and serious, and then, panicked, “Don’t!” when Pete tries to reach for him.
