    "What's wrong?" Jim asked. "Is there something wrong with Spock too?"

    Leonard opened his mouth again, closed it, and stared down at the ground for a moment. He scraped his fingers in the dirt. The long trail was easily defined by the light. Leonard returned to Jim's side and started to write.

    Jim hovered over his shoulder to read what he wrote. “You can’t speak?” Leonard continued to write. Jim read every word out loud, like he’d magically start to hear again if he did. “I can’t hear. Spock can’t see? Spock, are you- you can’t see anything?”

    “Negative, Captain.” Spock recalled Jim couldn’t hear him and shook his head.

    Jim let out a long sigh, and he chewed on his bottom lip. He looked between Leonard and Spock. Without being able to hear how loud he was, Jim ended up shouting, “Well, gentlemen, I think we have a dilemma on our hands.”
