Meryl and Milly get an internship, Wolfwood and his brothers are running the orphanage despite a mysterious debt-collector claiming they owe him money, and Vash is trying to solve too many problems at once. Too bad when they finally cross paths again they think the only one who remembers their past lives is themselves. God forbid they talk to each other like normal people. [The Trigun gang have all been reincarnated but they think they're the only ones who remember, because I thought it would be funny okay?]
My original title for this story was: reincarnation au but they're all idiots.

The smell of cigarette smoke and dried sweat. Whiskey and old leather. Callused hands against his skin and a smile, a rough whisper, a laugh like the crack of a whip.
“Wolf…”
Wind blowing faintly against his cheeks as the confetti floated down, getting stuck in their hair. The clink of glass, gentle clatter of a bottle falling from a hand gone slack. A low exhale from the man at his side, almost relaxed, like a sigh.
“Wolf…wood…?”a conversation about dying, a conversation about living, and a conversation about staying.

Vash can’t help but crumble once more and warble out a teary, “Nico,” canines biting down on his flesh hand to stop it from reaching out.
Nick’s breath catches in his throat.
He isn’t understanding what happened and can’t even begin to draw any conclusions, yet Nick doesn’t expect any answers from Vash while he’s clearly not coherent either. Vash’s form makes him look undeniably—purposely?—smaller despite his stature, so much like the other children he helped raise in Hopeland, when they couldn’t quite deal with all the huge bounts of pain churning in their fragile bodies and would shrivel up like they were back in the safety of a womb.

He stopped, and threw a look over his shoulder. His maroon shades had slid lower over the bridge of his nose, allowing his eyes to bathe in artificial, soulless lighting. Vash resented it, for nothing suited him more than a new dawn to look after and cherish.
And yet, despite the promises of death haunting July's vivid shadows, despite the promises of worse haunting Vash's steps, he was still beautiful.
With a soft smile, Vash opened his mouth.
Despite everything that is said and done, Vash continues to be grateful.

Well, it wasn't like Nicholas could help it.
Vash was beautifulーGod, he didn't know how many times he had make peace with and marry this fact. He had, ultimately, on his palms Nicholas's heart, cradled like he wasn't afraid of the smoke on his tongue, the gunpowder on his fingers, the blood on his skin.
And oh, wasn't he Nicholas's kindest of dreams in flesh and bones?
Nicholas couldn't help it. He threw his dying cig to the sands below and leant forward to replace the ash on his lips with Vash's own.
Nicholas used to have glimpses of heavens on his hands, bright and broken and beautiful.

And Vash wants to argue, but he can’t. Because Wolfwood will repeatedly toss aside the huge machine gun he normally keeps glued to his back, will scrub his collar free of the blood it’s usually drenched in, and will abstain from smoking despite a severe nicotine dependence, just so he can drink shitty coffee with Vash in a hospital storeroom.
Vash, a strictly civilians-only-doctor, has every reason to stay away from Wolfwood, an infamous devil hunter who’s often hospitalized at Vash’s workplace.
He falls in love with Wolfwood anyway.

Summary
Wolfwood’s pulse fluttered. Slow, weak, but there. Any other human could not have survived with a pulse this slow for this long, but whatever they had made him into was keeping him alive. His skin was cool against Vash’s fingers, but not cold. Not dead. Just close enough to fool him into digging half a grave.
Vash closed his eyes and leaned forward, resting his forehead against Wolfwood’s.
“Live until I get back, okay?”
