Delicious, awesome, pacy thing that I could not put down. Even the character portrait scenes are written with urgency and elegance. The fic is not comedy but the writer has a really vibrant, ironic sense of humour that comes out in every sentence. Fixes the horrible environmental politics of Advent (fucking) Children. Lots of food, lots of haircut alterations as character moments, some very good timeline-cutting scenes and text message parts, goes the Polycule Route, a class better than the majority of time travel Cloud internal-isekais.
Metafiction reading - perhaps everything in the FF7 section here, every interpretation and missing scene and AU, is part of the world of this fanfic? A story handed to fans that cracks open its own possibilities.

Cloud shrugged. Then he took another breath.

"It said I was part of a project," he said dryly.
Cloud hallucinates. Voices sometimes, or music -- it's hard to tell. It's just another consequence of Jenova's encroaching presence in his DNA, and four years after Meteorfall everyone's more or less adapted to it and other oddities associated with being not quite human. Mostly.
What begins as a chance encounter with something that isn't Jenova soon leads to a fight for survival that can no longer be contained in the spaces between numbers, as Cloud tries to keep himself together and finally put his past behind him.

Terrific, weird, dense adaptation AU; a seriously mentally ill Cloud, working as a mechanic and supported by his friends, is colonised by a scientist from our dimension whose attempts to figure him out call her ethics into question. Increasingly sprawling and the body horror stuff is quite difficult - the tone is a lot darker and grittier than the game - but a good, inventive story with a lot of terrific lines and funny moments. Character interpretations are different, but interesting, familiar and plausible.
