Summary
When the simple way of life for the Dìguó Tribes is threatened with war by an invading clan, all the alphas across the land are forced to join the army and fight for the head alpha. But Jimin is the only son of the Park family and his father is a frail alpha, sporting a lasting injury from the last war he fought in. So even though it's forbidden for omegas to fight, Jimin sneaks away from home to join the army in his father's place.
There he meets his alpha commanding officer: Min Yoongi, and stupidly finds himself falling in love with him all whilst trying to hide his omega rank and bring honour to his family.

Hyacinth had been tasked with bringing the fireworks to Aubrey, because, as she’d told them in a deeply suspicious manner, she “knew a guy”. She’d brought with her a rucksack full of sparklers and fireworks of dubious legality, and said rucksack was currently positioned near the end of the terrace. Kate saw more than one child (and adult) look longingly in its direction.
Honestly, Kate was beginning to think the only normal one in this family was, inexplicably, Colin.
(But then again, Colin had also shoveled about five bhajis and three laddoos into his mouth in rapid succession upon arriving at Aubrey, and then asked what was for lunch).

At first, they seemed like any other group of fierce corpses, shambling and seemingly aimless, almost something of an inevitability in a land so torn and barely sewn back together with countless wars. Many people die violently, many die unburied, many die unjustly, and it's laughable to think that all the cultivation sects across the land would have the time or incentive to care for them all. Awash in blood, most were elderly, wiry yet frail as farmers tend to be.
And then, they started going for the Great Clans, tearing the strongest Cultivators of the land limb from limb with teeth and bare hands, leaving everyone else untouched and unharmed in their wake as they shamble on - Resolute and sure, as if guided by an innate knowledge of the ground beneath their feet - to destinations unknown.
Or, the Wen remnants demand a recompense.

"Here I thought you two would still be gallivanting across the countryside in your honeymoon," Jiang Wanyin said upon seeing the two, the last word said as if it's something disgusting and abhorrent. Zhong Hanliang feels his own brows knit minutely. It is well-known, even outside of the cultivation world, that Hanguang-Jun and Sandu Sengshou has never seen eye to eye. He finds it curious, and perhaps another piece to the puzzle of what Wei Wuxian is to Hanguang-Jun that the animosity extends towards the younger man, who by all accounts seems to be a new addition to the generally stagnant, almost incestuous game board of the Cultivation world.

Lan Zhan nods as the boat nears the dock and the figure becomes clearer. It's a young man with dark hair down to his shoulders and a wide smile. He is also Asian, and as he turns his gaze to Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan finds himself robbed of breath for the second time that day. The young man is beautiful. He could, Lan Zhan thinks, be Lan Zhan's age, possibly a bit younger. He's tan, wearing a bright pink shirt with the restaurant logo on it, and cargo shorts. He has a small mole under his lower lip. "Hey, guys!" he greets with a wave. "Need a hand?"
"Yes, please, if you don't mind," Lan Huan shouts back. He gets up and begins the preparations for docking, handing the young man several ropes. "Thank you, Wei Ying."
Wei Ying. That's the boy's name.

He takes the children to buy black suits, he leaves them behind in the apartment, twelve-year-old A-Huan assuring him he’s old enough to be left alone with his brother, to go to their house and oversee it being packed up, the furniture sold, the personal effects of his brother and his wife put in storage.
There’s no room for decisions or education. Only him sitting at his table with two children, eating in silence, only hearing A-Huan whispering to his brother in the middle of the night, only the three of them all tangled up together with grief and confusion and pain.
And the certainty that he isn’t… that he won’t be a good parent.
