“Lukas?” he asked, voice soft as he made his way over.
Lukas startled a bit, dropping his hand and turning away from the window. He relaxed a little once he realized who was approaching. “Jesse, hey. Sorry, did I wake you up?”
“No, but I wish you would’ve.” He took his hand, giving it a little squeeze. “What’s wrong, honey?”
Lukas looked down at their hands, absently running his thumb along one of Jesse’s scars. He didn’t speak for a few moments, letting the sound of the wind outside fill the silence. A flash of lightning illuminated his face long enough for Jesse to see his troubled expression.

Summary
The thing about ice fishing was that it took a very long time.
Sokka stared into the icy water as he waited for any fish to consider biting. He hoped he had prepared everything correctly; his father had taken him ice fishing exactly twice before, and now he was trying to remember how to do it alone.
It had been two years since his father and the other men of the village had left to fight in the war, leaving Sokka as the only responsible male figure. Everyone else was either too old, too young, or had no fighting experience. The safety of the tribe rested on his shoulders now.

“Aiden just likes to feel powerful. He doesn’t care about the consequences. And he pushes Maya and Gill into doing whatever he says.” Lukas stared at the floor. He didn’t want to be having this conversation.
“He wasn’t that bad before, right? Weren’t you guys close?” Jesse asked.
Lukas couldn’t help the bitter laugh that left him at that. Jesse gave him a confused look and Lukas wished he could be anywhere else.

“What’s wrong?” Avys spoke up, seeming to have manifested next to Soule. In his arms was the plushie he grabbed earlier, his sleepy face being squished by the plush.
“Avys? What are you-?”
“As if I could sleep through all that chattering….” Avys quickly explained himself. Once he said that, Eugene appeared at the door, the salmon colored towel draped over his shoulders. He simply glanced at the group and locked the door behind him, a slight smirk on his lips.
“You’re all still awake? Damn, and I thought you all were already in dreamland.”
“I wish,” Avys said, placing his head on Eugene’s shoulder once he was closer.
“Well, we’re all here together now… so we can all sleep peacefully for the night,” Eugene responded, rubbing Avys’ arm as he held him close.
For some odd reason, Soule felt a sudden shift in the atmosphere, Eugene’s slight gentle tone ringing in his ears.
