“What? No! I’m fine. Just…too much talking today.” Deran stifled the threatening cough.
Nothing was going to keep them from going to Belize this time. Nothing. Not even his own body.

Deran swore as his call went straight to Adrian’s voicemail.
Again.
It was Adrian’s birthday and Deran had a surprise lined up but he’d ignored Adrian’s attempts to make plans earlier in the week and today he’d ducked his calls, all in the name of preserving the surprise.
He supposed it wasn’t a surprise that he was getting the same treatment now. He was beginning to think he’d made a colossal mistake by keeping this a secret from Adrian.
He patted the rings in his front pocket, then the plane tickets in the side pocket of his cargo shorts.
Belize and a proposal. He had it all planned out.

Adrian jumped, his hand leaving his arm, looking guilty.
Pope felt guilty for startling Adrian; he knew how to move so he made enough noise to let Adrian know when he was approaching. It’s just that sometimes it was nice to look at the guy. He’d never been much for staring at pretty faces but there was something about Adrian that drew his attention.
He made sure to hit the floorboard that creaked so Adrian knew he was walking toward him. “Let me see your arm.”

Summary
It was ancient history, or at least history that very few paid attention to anymore. Someone—military, private sector, educational institution—it didn’t really matter who it was, just that they figured out how to manipulate a gene in human DNA. These scientists turned on the alleles, in this case three alternative forms, on the same place on the chromosome that happened to control certain sexual identities. Over time the exact technical names were forgotten but the nicknames remained; the standards had no appreciable changes but the other two options…they made things very interesting. Dominants and recessives were a special subset of the population and they were controlled by both societal expectations and their own bodies. Allele identities were very important, at least to a small segment of the population.
This is the story of two young men who burned so brightly, they set fire to these allele identity societal expectations.
