It's 1968, Ponyboy is living in New York, attending NYU on a full academic scholarship. He's just turned eighteen and is beginning to grow into adulthood as he becomes a successful author. Things get complicated when he realizes an old foe has also moved to the city and takes sudden interest in his writing. On top of that, he's trying to juggle a new love interest and the troubles of his family in Tulsa. All of this, and his publishers are nagging him for a sequel to The Outsiders. Pony's at a fork in the road, and he isn't sure which will be the road not taken.

It's 1967, Ponyboy Curtis is almost seventeen and about to graduate a year early. His grades are high, he holds records in track, he won his school's art contest, and he has the opportunity for his theme to be published in a real book. The only issue is, he still isn't happy. He misses the loved ones he has lost, and it seems like bad things just keep happening to him. Things get even worse when his girlfriend dumps him and he's forced to grapple with a part of his identity he'd rather ignore. It's hard staying gold.
