Summary
Calum’s breath hits his cheek. Luke’s brain is white noise now. Calum’s never touched him like this before. His mouth, his face. Not the stupid space at the corner of his lips that Luke didn’t even know was sensitive until right this second. And it’s not just the thumb on his lip that’s doing it. It’s his eyes, the way they linger, pinning him down more effectively than any dream-Calum ever did.
“What happens in these dreams, Luke?”
The thumb leaves his lip, slides down to his chin, coaxing. Like he’s trying to pull the truth right out of him. Luke swallows hard. His voice doesn’t want to exist. Calum’s eyes don’t move, don’t blink. They’re heavy on him, dark, focused, expectant.
Luke hasn’t confessed anything, not really. But the way Calum’s looking at him now makes him feel stripped bare. Like the truth is already written across his forehead in Sharpie and Calum’s just waiting for him to read it out loud.
Luke exhales, shaky. “I think you already know.”

Summary
It still catches him off guard sometimes, how big the feeling is. Calum has spent the better part of his life loving Luke in the margins. In passing glances, in shared rooms, in the blurred spaces between shows and flights and being too tired to think straight. He’s spent just as long missing him too, in breaks and holidays and quarantines and stretches where life pulled them to different coasts, learning how to live with the hollow space in his gut.
But this is different. It’s missing him with the full awareness of what they are now. It’s missing him as more.

That absolutely does not end up happening. And if Michael was still around to witness it, he would tear Luke to shreds because, honestly, what the fuck was he thinking?
Luke doesn’t have an answer to that.

Yeah, it’s impolite. But Calum isn’t a saint, he’s only a high-school teacher.
He walks back to the neighbouring apartment and slams the note on the door none-too-kindly. He also pointedly slams his own door shut when he gets back to his apartment.
There’s the buzzing of speakers, and a prolonged silence. Then, Calum hears the creak of a chair shifting followed by the click of a door unlocking. He prays that his note conveyed his sentiment: I just want to get some sleep.
The chair creaks loudly as its inhabitant reoccupies it. Then,
“Sorry, man,” says the voice, presumably to Ash. “Jus’ some stray at the door.”
Calum seethes. What the fuck?
“Yeah, no,” Asshole Neighbour goes on, clearly and loudly, like he knows Calum can hear. Which is true. “No, I’d just invest in some soundproofing instead of fucking around in other peoples’ business.”
Or, Calum moves into a new apartment, but the walls are really thin. Also, his new neighbour is annoyingly loud.

Luke jumps at the deep voice sounding from behind him. He spins around to face it, one hand clutching his camera in case he’s about to get kicked out for being in the wrong section when he is, in fact, meant to be here, as a registered photographer.
But when Luke turns around, there’s just one guy there, lounging on a small stack of boxes with one leg hitched up for him to sling an arm over, exuding calm confidence.
He’s clearly a model.

Calum smiles at the last person in line at the bar as he hands them their glass of wine, then turns to Luke and sighs heavily, crossing his arms over his chest. The material of his shirt wrinkles and folds and stretches in all the right ways. “From the first day of school after I moved here, I knew you were going to be a problem.”
“A problem?” Luke feigns offense, scoffing and sucking violently at his tiny straw, trying to get to the dredges of his drink. Calum rolls his eyes and starts making another. By the end of the night, Luke’s going to have the process of Calum assembling a California Dream emblazoned in his mind for eternity. “I wasn’t the one who showed up and immediately acted like I owned the place.”

Back in his hometown for a wedding, Luke bumps into Calum, his former academic rival and high school crush, and their chemistry is as strong as ever.

It gets to about three p.m. and Calum’s seen so many models at this point he thinks his vision is going a bit blurry; and that’s when the next boy “Luke Hemmings” gets let in. He’s stopped pretending to review the portfolios ahead of time on the iPad in front of him, just looking at the models as they come in and making a note whether it’s worth looking at it afterwards.
He kind of wishes he had looked at Luke's before he walked through the door though because he almost swallows his tongue.
