Castiel gets himself into serious trouble after he and Gabriel break into an animal research facility and free all the test animals, and now he is on the run from the police. In a desperate attempt to escape from them he runs down an allyway and sees a car parked outside the backdoor of a pizza place, with a man getting inside. He takes a chance and dives into the passenger side, screaming at the man to drive, and surprisingly he does. Well all people have their 'How We Met' story, and this is theirs.

Summary
Environmental rights activist Castiel Novak may not have grown up on the Plains, but he has thrown himself into protecting and conserving South Dakota’s natural treasures as if he was a native. When Dean Winchester, Hollywood’s modern day John Wayne, comes to South Dakota to film his next movie, Cas is more focused on preventing the environmental damage Dean’s movies cause than hoping for a chance to meet him. After Cas makes some negative comments on social media about the actor’s authenticity as a cowboy, he is invited to spend a week alone with the star, roughing it in the wilderness. Cas sets out to prove exactly how fake Dean Winchester really is, but he isn’t expecting to find out that Dean is a troubled man running from a past that is just as difficult as his own.

This story is meaningful, and if you're looking to work through issues involving lost possibilities and/or moving on, this is awesome. If you are sad and looking to be cheered up with fluffy Destiel fluff, look elsewhere.Cas is Dean's prof. Dean is a possibly homophobic student? Twelve years later, they meet again and discuss might-have-been's (Dean's aggressive attitude in class was the result of his crush on Cas). A little after, they meet again and see the alternative happy endings they each got.

"I had to draw all them perfectly," Cas insists, and Dean suddenly can't get rid of the image of Cas, clutching on to a Crayola washable marker, jamming it into his skin forcefully like a little kid mashes his markers on the paper in a vehement attempt to make the color deeper.
"And now you're insulted 'cause I don't appreciate 'em?" Dean asks, bewildered.
"No," Cas lies petulantly.
"Huh." The stubborn child version of Cas Dean has painted in his mind is now clutching his paper possessively, shielding it from scrutiny.
They drive in silence for a while.
"Thank you for making my freckles," Dean grouses finally, knowing that it's the only way Cas will forgive him.
