Twelve years after Yhwach's defeat, Ichigo is happy. The worlds are at peace. He has a wife, a child, and a normal human job. Everyone he wants to protect is safe.
And if everything's not perfect, well, he's really good at stubbornly ignoring things. Like the claws he grows occasionally, and how his friends have scattered to the winds, and how nobody ever...did anything about the Soul King dying.
It works really well, up until some pink-haired asshole attacks Karakura Town and he realizes he's been bored out of his mind. Then it gets harder to ignore.

Ichigo’s life has always been defined in befores and afters.
Before Karin and Yuzu, he was an only child with no one to protect and no grand purpose to find his responsibility in. Before Grand Fisher, he was a silly crybaby who would brave the entire world just for his mother’s smile. Before Rukia, Ichigo was a brash student whose foremost worries were his sisters' eating well and shrines of dead children being disrespected.
The afters always bring a monumental change, some sweeping shift that goes down to the root of Ichigo’s soul. He’s learned to roll with it, to learn from each experience the aftermath brings, and how to live in it. But now, in the wreckage of his town and the groan of bent lumbar echoing in his ears, he’s not quite sure if he can live with this.
